Baseball Wins Game One of Series Against Canisius

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team won game one of the three-game series against Canisius, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. Noah Chapman struck out 12 batters for a new career high, while freshman Ethan Nobles got his first collegiate win.

Jake Mueller opened the scoring in the first inning, batting in leadoff man Jake Barbour with a fielder's choice for the quick 1-0 lead. Chapman got the start for the Spartans and was dialed in from first pitch. The starter punched out the first four batters of the game with only real blemish coming from a walk then a deep centerfield double to tie up the score at 1-1 in the third inning. Chapman pitched until the end of the sixth frame with only four hits given up, one walk allowed and a career-high 12 strikeouts. This marks the most strikeouts since Chris Mason recorded 13 punch outs on March 3, 2018, against Davidson.

"We had to handle our business," said Chapman. "I knew I had quite a few strikeouts, but I didn't know I had that many til coach came up to me after I was taken out. It was quite an honor to have this performance tonight."

The game continued with a pitching duel until the bottom of the seventh when Brantley Truitt hit a 409-foot two-run home run to extend the lead for the Spartans to 3-1. In the top of the eighth Nobles, who relieved Chapman in the seventh, ran into trouble. The reliever walked two straight batters then threw a wild pitch to advance them to second and third with no outs. Head Coach Cody Ellis turned to John Horton from the bullpen to get out of the inning. The burly righthander struck out two batters then coaxed a fly out to get out of the jam. Horton then retired the side in the ninth to get to the final score of 3-1.
