GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team lost against No. 16 Wake Forest, 5-1, on Tuesday night at UNCG Baseball Stadium. Luke Jenkins was the Spartans' best bat in the lineup, going three-for-three on the night, and four separate freshmen pitched in tonight's contest for UNCG.
Redshirt freshman Isaac Miles got the start against Wake Forest's vaunted hitting lineup, tossing three and a third innings with five runs given up on five hits and two strikeouts. The Demon Deacons struck early in the first after a walk, steal, then a single up the middle which scored the run. The Spartans battled back with a run in the bottom half thanks to a bases loaded ground out RBI by Brantley Truitt to tie up the score at 1-1 after one inning. In the second frame, a walk by Miles put a runner on first base with no outs. Wake Forest's Jackson Miller stepped into the batter's box and drove a fly ball deep into center field that unfortunately popped out of the Spartan's glove at the wall. What originally would have been a two-run home run, ended up only scoring one because of a miscue on the bases, leaving the Demon Deacons up 2-1.
The fourth inning saw Wake Forest add another three runs and forced Miles out of the game for Ayden West who, with a man on third and one out, got out of the frame unscathed. The game transformed into a pitching duel as Wake Forest's staff shut down the UNCG bats. However, Head Coach Cody Ellis went on to use three true freshman pitchers, West, Cannon Leeand Ethan Nobles. The trio combined for five strikeouts, four hits, three walks and no runs in the final five innings. The Spartans mustered only two hits the rest of the contest to end the game at 5-1.
