GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team is set for its fourth weekend of the season, co-hosting its third tournament with the UNCG/Elon Invitational from Feb. 27-March 1.
Three games will be played on Friday, Feb. 27, at Hunt Softball Park, while Saturday and Sunday's games will be at UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans and Phoenix will welcome Charleston Southern and Indiana to the Triad.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG extended its winning streak to 10 games after an 8-4 victory on Tuesday over Queens.
- Kaylyn Belfield and Avery Bouquin each went 3-for-5 at the plate.
- Belfield scored three runs with one RBI and one stolen base, while Bouquin scored one run and had a team-best four RBI.
- Nya South was the only other Spartan who had a multi-hit game, swinging 2-for-3 with one walk.
- Brooklyn Shroyer tossed 4.0 innings in relief, allowing just three hits with two runs, two walks and striking out seven batters.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
- UNCG was voted as the favorite in SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes with 43 points.
- Belfield and Macy Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Salem Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Hadley Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
- The 2026 roster includes 12 returners, seven freshmen and two transfers. Of the 12 returners, five started in 40 or more games last season.
- The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
- The Blue & Gold also have Gardner returning, who was one of three Spartans last season to hit 10 or more homers, placing her second on the team with 11 home runs.
- Michael is the leading returner in RBI and walks, tallying 36 and 23, respectively during her freshman season.
- UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
- This was the seventh-straight season and 10th year with 30-plus wins under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is now in her 14th season at the helm.
- Belfield is currently leading the Spartans with a .483 batting average with 19 runs scored and a .500 on-base percentage.
- Bouquin is second on the team with a .426 hitting clip with 11 runs scored, six doubles and 11 RBI.
- Laney Deane is pacing the team with 21 RBI and seven doubles. She is leading the SoCon in doubles, doubles per game (0.44), hit by pitch (6) and hit by pitch per game (.38).
- Three Spartans have four home runs each, including Deane, Michael and South.
- Shroyer has a 1.53 ERA with a 6-2 record in 12 appearances with 50.1 innings tossed. She has struck out 63 batters and given up just 30 hits.
- Shroyer is leading the SoCon in innings pitched (50.1), pitching appearances (12), saves (1), shutouts (3), strikeouts (63) and victories (6).
- UNCG is leading the SoCon in ERA (2.06), hit by pitch (15), team strikeouts per seven innings (6.36) and WHIP (1.27).
RUNDOWN ON ELON
- Elon was voted to take the top spot in the 2026 CAA South Division, earning four first-place votes.
- Greta Hessenthaler, Chloe Hatzopoulos and Kayla Wilson earned spots on the 2026 Preseason All-CAA Team.
- The Phoenix is the defending CAA Champion, earning its first-ever CAA conference title last season.
- Elon went 33-21 overall and 21-6 in the CAA last year, reaching the NCAA Columbia Regional, falling to No. 8 South Carolina, 5-2, and Virginia, 12-0.
- In addition to its three preseason honorees, Elon returns 13 letterwinners and five starters from last season's squad.
- This will be Head Coach Kathy Bocock's 15th season at the helm.
- Hatzopoulos is pacing the team with a .300 batting average, swinging 12-for-40 with six runs scored, two doubles and six RBI.
- Teagan Baulsir is the leader in RBI with nine and home runs with two.
- Three pitchers have thrown 20 or more innings this season so far, including Anna Dew (27.1), Lia Miller (28.0) and Chana Wolfe (24.0).
- Dew is 2-2 in the circle with one complete game and a team-best 29 strikeouts, giving up just 19 runs.
RUNDOWN ON CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
- Charleston Southern was voted to finish fifth in the 2026 Big South Preseason Poll.
- Jordyn Dimond and Charlee Yourman were voted to the 2026 Big South Preseason All-Conference Team.
- The Bucs finished with a 20-29 overall record and a 9-9 Big South record in 2025.
- Blakeley Kingsmore (.392) and Dimond (.375) are pacing the team with their batting averages.
- Kingsmoore has scored a team-best 12 runs for the Buccaneers and has successfully stolen 10 of 11 bases.
- Yourman is leading the squad with eight RBI and two home runs.
- In the circle, Riley Lauffer has tossed 48.2 innings, giving up 63 hits and 42 runs. She has struck out a team-best 26 batters and has a 3-5 record with four complete games.
RUNDOWN ON INDIANA
- Indiana went 34-20 overall and 10-12 in the Big 10 in 2025, playing three games at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional, defeating Saint Louis, 4-2, but falling to Oklahoma State twice to conclude the season.
- Alex Cooper, Avery Parker and Aly VanBrandt were named to the 2026 Big Ten Softball Players to Watch List.
- The Hoosiers have faced two top 25 teams, including defeating No. 25 Ohio State, 12-3 in five innings, and falling to No. 22 Arizona State, 7-6.
- Seven from Indiana have a hitting percentage over .300, with VanBrandt leading the way with a .529 hitting clip.
- VanBrandt is also pacing the team with 22 runs, 27 hits, six doubles, four triples and successfully stealing 11-of-11 bases.
- Four pitchers have had significant time in the circle this season, with Aubree Hooks and Taylor Hess each going 3-0 this season so far.
- Ella Troutt and Hess each have 20 strikeouts this season, while Hooks has a 1.31 ERA.
- Indiana is leading the Big Ten in batting average (.385), stolen bases per game (2.80), total stolen bases (42), triples (11) and triples per game (.73).
- The Hoosiers are leading the nation in triples and triples per game.
- Head Coach Shonda Stanton (Spagnola) is a 1996 alumna of UNCG, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in History, while also leading the Spartans to back-to-back Big South Championships. She has been at the helm of the Hoosiers for nine seasons.
