GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team snapped Furman's three-game win streak behind a close 67-64 victory on Sunday afternoon inside Timmons Arena.
Justin Neely led the game with 24 points and 13 rebounds for his 16th double-double of the season and 23rd of his career.
Donald Whitehead Jr. and
Noah Norgaard chipped in 11 points each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a missed layup from the Paladins, UNCG's
Lilian Marville secured the first basket of the game, 2-0, at 19:09. Following his basket, the lead changed eight times, which was the final total at the end of the game, as the Spartans took control and held the advantage for the rest of the contest. Furman did keep the distance narrow, not allowing UNCG to hold more than an eight-point lead in the first half. The eight-point cushion was thanks to back-to-back free throws from Neely at 3:24, 34-26. The first half ended with a 6-5 run, in favor of the Paladins, but UNCG claimed the 39-32 lead going into the break.
UNCG saw a 10-point advantage, 42-32, within the first 12 seconds of the second half with
KJ Younger's and-one play. The rest of the game was a back-and-forth battle and Furman came within one three times. The latter was with eight seconds left, as once again
Justin Neely was able to seal the win by making back-to-back free throws, 67-64, before Furman's Alex Wilkins missed a rushed three-pointer before the buzzer.
