GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team is set to host Lehigh and Tarleton State this weekend in the UNCG Tournament from March 13-15.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG competed in Wilmington, North Carolina, this past weekend and went 1-4.
- The Spartans earned a 2-0 victory over Army on Sunday, earning their eighth shutout of the season.
- Brooklyn Shroyer struck out eight batters in her eighth victory of the season.
- Shroyer also surpassed the 500-career strikeout milestone in the feat.
- She now has 503 in her career, with 90 of them while in the Blue & Gold uniform and 413 while with Fairleigh Dickinson.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
- UNCG was voted as the favorite in the Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes with 43 points.
- Kaylyn Belfield and Macy Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Salem Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Hadley Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
- The 2026 roster includes 12 returners, seven freshmen and two transfers. Of the 12 returners, five started in 40 or more games last season.
- The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
- The Blue & Gold also have Gardner returning, who was one of three Spartans last season to hit 10 or more homers, placing her second on the team with 11 home runs.
- Michael is the leading returner in RBI and walks, tallying 36 and 23, respectively during her freshman season.
- UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
- This was the seventh-straight season and 10th year with 30-plus wins under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is now in her 14th season at the helm.
- Belfield is currently leading the Spartans with a .394 batting average with 23 runs scored and a .412 on-base percentage.
- Avery Bouquin is second on the team with a .373 hitting clip with 15 runs scored, eight doubles and 16 RBI.
- Laney Deane is pacing the team with 29 RBI and 10 doubles. She is leading the SoCon in doubles (10) and doubles per game (0.37). She is also second in hit by pitch (6) and third in RBI (29).
- Her 10 doubles are 18th in the nation.
- Nya South is leading the team with six home runs, while Deane has five and Michael has four.
- Shroyer has a 1.75 ERA with an 8-4 record in 16 appearances with 76.0 innings tossed. She has struck out 90 batters and given up just 44 hits.
- Shroyer is leading the SoCon in hits allowed per seven innings (4.05), innings pitched (76.0), pitching appearances (16), saves (1), shutouts (5), strikeouts (90) and victories (8).
- She is nationally ranked in the top 25 in five categories: shutouts (2nd/5), strikeouts (11th/90), innings pitched (14th/76.0), complete games (24th/6) and hits allowed per seven innings (23rd/4.05).
- UNCG is leading the SoCon in doubles (40), ERA (2.61), hit by pitch (17), hits (199), team strikeouts per seven innings (5.87) and WHIP (1.31).
RUNDOWN ON LEHIGH
- The Mountain Hawks are currently 13-7 overall after splitting a midweek doubleheader with UMBC on Wednesday in Baltimore, Maryland.
- Prior to Lehigh's loss to UMBC, the team was on a seven-game winning streak.
- Lehigh is leading the Patriot League in batting average (.325), doubles (33), doubles per game (1.83), RBI per game (6.06), scoring (6.61), slugging percentage (.480), stolen bases per game (0.78) and total stolen bases (14).
- Kelly Fricker and Peyton Sward are pacing the conference with a .429 batting average and a 1.06 runs per game average for each.
- Sydney Parlett leads the league in doubles (8) and doubles per game (0.44).
- Maddy Clark leads the Patriot League with a 1.68 walks allowed per seven innings average.
- Addison Moorman is leading the Mountain Hawks in the circle with a 3.53 ERA in 33.2 innings pitched this season.
- Lehigh was picked to finish third in the 2026 Patriot League Preseason Poll.
- Sward and Fricker were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.
- The Mountain Hawks concluded the 2025 season 28-24 overall and 13-5 in the Patriot League.
- Head Coach Fran Troyan is in his 31st season at the helm of the Lehigh softball program.
RUNDOWN ON TARLETON STATE
- The Texans come to Greensboro 16-9 overall on the 2026 campaign.
- The squad went 2-2 last week in the San Marcos Showdown. Tarleton State defeated Saint Francis, 11-0 and Texas State, 6-5, but fell to host No. 15 Texas A&M, 15-2 and in its second contest with Texas State, 8-2.
- The Texans are ranked in top-50 nationally in 11 categories: hits (235, 17th), total runs (181/25th), RBI (163/26th), batting average (.344/27th), on-base percentage (.435/29th), RBI per game (6.52/30th), scoring (7.24/30th), sacrifice bunts (15/32nd), triples (7/37th), walks (96/41st) and (hit by pitch (19/49th).
- Mikayla Wilson is pacing the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) with 35 hits this season.
- Hayden Fox leads the league with a .558 on-base percentage and is second with a 1.04 runs per game average.
- Mariah DeBose paces the WAC in triples (3) and triples per game (0.14). Her three triples this season ranks 15th nationally.
- Shelby Schultz stands out in the circle with her two saves being ranked 22nd in the country.
- Madison Runyan is second in the WAC in assists (53), assists per game (2.12).
- Macie Vickers is second in the conference in doubles (9), doubles per game (0.36) and RBI (28).
- The Texans were picked to finish first in the WAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- After being named the 2025 WAC Freshman of the Year, Schultz was named Preseason Co-Player of the Year and Preseason Pitcher of the Year ahead of the 2026 season.
- Head Coach Mark Cumpian is in his 10th season with the Tarleton State softball program. He led the Texans to a 36-22 overall record last season and a 16-9 WAC mark.
