CHICAGO, Ill. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team took game one of the three-game series against the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), 9-5, at Curtis Granderson Stadium on Friday night. Tanner Berry and Jake Mueller led the way with six combined RBIs in the game.
UNCG struck first with a Mueller solo home run in the first frame for his first dinger of the season to open the scoring at 1-0. The Flames responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead 2-1. However, UNCG ace Noah Chapman went for another three and a third innings with no runs allowed to give the initiative back to the Spartans. The second and third frames saw the Spartans break the game open with back-to-back three run innings. The rally started with Tanner Berry driving in an RBI from a fielder's choice, then Mueller continued his offensive rampage with an RBI single for his second of the game. The second inning rounded out with a run scored on an error by UIC to give the Spartans the 4-2 lead. The third inning saw a leadoff double by Luke Holland then a single by Brantley Truitt to put runners on first and third with no outs. Nine-hole batter Berry stepped up and delivered an opposite field shot over the right field wall for a three-run home run, his first of his career, to extend the lead to 7-2 after the third.
The game entered into a lull as both pitching staffs settled into the game. UNCG jump started the offense again in the sixth, with a Holland RBI single up the middle, but UIC answered with an RBI of its own in the bottom of half. UNCG was undeterred as it pushed across another run in the seventh which was met by two runs by the Flames in the eighth, but it was not enough as the Spartans closed out game one with a score of 9-5.
