CHICAGO, Ill. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team gutted out the win over the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC), 6–5, at Curtis Granderson Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Ayden West secured his first win of his collegiate career, while classmate Tanner Berry notched two RBIs in the contest.
UNCG began the game with another first inning RBI by Jake Mueller to score Jake Barbour for the quick 1-0 lead. JT Weaver got the start for the Spartans in game two and was pulled early, giving up just three hits and four runs, two of which were earned. UNCG immediately began chipping away at the deficit as Berry drove in an RBI in the second frame to make the score 4-2. The UNCG bats continued to produce in the third inning, as a sacrifice fly from Brody Gardner drove in another run which led to Brantley Truitt tying up the game with an RBI single, 4-4.
In the fifth inning, Jacob Budzik gave UNCG the lead but the Flames tied it back up at five apiece in the bottom half of the frame. The game turned into a pitching duel as neither side could solve the other. West was brought in in the ninth inning to get the Spartans out of a jam with two runners on and one out.
The gutsy freshman was able to coax an infield fly then a strikeout to push the game into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Berry mashed a single off the wall for his 11th RBI of the week to give UNCG the lead going into the bottom half. West took over from there, putting away the next three UIC batters for the 6-5 win.
