GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team began The Southern Conference (SoCon) season besting defending champion ETSU, 6–3, in game one at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Friday night. Noah Chapman earned the win while three different Spartans mashed home runs in the contest.
The Bucs' offense switched into gear in the top of the first with three straight singles to push across the opening run of the game. UNCG responded in the bottom of the second as Luke Holland clubbed a 432-foot solo shot over the left field trees to tie up the game at one apiece. The next batter, Brody Gardner, jumped on the first pitch he saw and mashed a solo shot of his own to put UNCG up 2-1 in the contest. ETSU battled back in the top of the third inning, tagging Chapman for a two-run blast to retake the lead at 3-2. However, Chapman was dialed in for the rest of the game as he finished his outing with seven innings pitched, eight strikeouts and three walks.
The Spartans strung together a rally in the bottom of the fourth frame with a Brantley Truitt single, an Ethan Brittain sac bunt and a Tanner Berry walk to put runners on first and third with one out. Jacob Dilley stepped up to the dish and delieverd a three-run shot into left field to give UNCG the lead at 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans added one more run by way of a Holland sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6-3. JT Weaver came into relief for the final two frames of action for the save opportunity. The senior delivered in the clutch, retiring the final six batters in order to secure the 6–3 victory.
