Softball Travels to Face ETSU in SoCon Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will begin The Southern Conference (SoCon) slate this weekend as it travels to Johnson City, Tennessee, to face ETSU on Saturday and Sunday at Betty Basler Field.

UNCG is entering the weekend 19-12 overall, while ETSU has a 12-8 overall mark. Last year, the Spartans won the series with a 2-1 record, defeating the Bucs with scores of 6-0 and 3-1, while ETSU claimed game two, 3-1.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG defeated Sun Belt opponent, Southern Mississippi on Wednesday, 8-1, earning its fourth-straight victory at UNCG Softball Stadium.
  • Nya South hit a grand slam and a solo home run for her first game with multiple homers.
  • This was also her first grand slam of her collegiate career. This is the first grand slam of the season for the Spartans and first since Macy Michael hit one against Western Carolina on May 3, 2025, in a 7-3 victory.
  • Brooklyn Shroyer earned her 10th win of the season, striking out four batters in 4.0 innings, and Nadia Andarowski retired two batters in 3.0 frames of work.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG was voted as the favorite in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes as well as 43 points.
  • Kaylyn Belfield and Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Salem Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Hadley Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
  • The 2026 roster includes 12 returners, seven freshmen and two transfers. Of the 12 returners, five started in 40 or more games last season.
  • The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
  • The Blue & Gold also have Gardner returning, who was one of three Spartans last season to hit 10 or more homers, placing her second on the team with 11 home runs.
  • Michael is the leading returner in RBI and walks, tallying 36 and 23, respectively during her freshman season.
  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
  • This was the seventh-straight season and 10th year with 30-plus wins under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is now in her 14th season at the helm.
  • Belfield is leading the SoCon in hits with 42 and paces the Spartans with a .404 batting average and 28 runs scored.
  • South is second on the team with a .392 hitting clip and is one of three Spartans with 29 hits this season, tying for second. 
  • Laney Deane is pacing the SoCon in doubles (10), doubles per game (0.32) and RBI (33). She is also second in hit by pitch (6) and total bases (60).
  • South is second in the SoCon and is leading the team with eight homers, while Deane is second with seven and Michael has six this season.
  • Shroyer is leading the SoCon in complete games (7), ERA (1.55), hits allowed (3.91), innings pitched (86.0), pitching appearances (18), shutouts (6), strikeouts (102), victories (10) and WHIP (0.93).
  • She is nationally ranked in the top 25 in six categories: shutouts (3rd/6), strikeouts (11th/102), hits allowed (17th/3.91), victories (20th/10), complete games (25th/7) and innings pitched (25th/86.0). 
  • UNCG is leading the SoCon in doubles (49), ERA (2.33), hits (232), hits allowed per seven innings (5.75), strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.86), team strikeouts per seven innings (5.85) and WHIP (1.27).  
 
RUNDOWN ON ETSU
  • ETSU concluded the 2025 season 18-37 overall and 6-15 in the SoCon.
  • The Bucs were voted to finish seventh in the 2026 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • ETSU began the season with four-straight victories and won nine of its first 10 games.
  • The Bucs are second in the SoCon in ERA (3.40), hits allowed per seven innings (7.44), on-base percentage (.387) and WHIP (1.47).
  • Abigail Taylor is nationally ranked sixth and leading the SoCon stealing .80 bases per game. Her 16 stolen bases this season are leading the SoCon and 21st in the nation.
  • Whitney Boone is pacing the team with a .377 batting average, five doubles, 23 hits and 18 RBI. Boone also has not been struck out in 20 games played and 61 at bats this season.
  • Payton Moore has hit a team-best four home runs.
  • Four pitchers on the Bucs' staff have pitched 20 or more innings this season, with Taylor Suchy throwing 29.2 innings for the most.
  • Eden Muncy leads the pitching staff with 22 strikeouts this season in 22.2 innings, allowing 17 hits and 10 runs.

UP NEXT
UNCG continues on the road to face SoCon foe Western Carolina next weekend beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 starting at 1:00 p.m. The third game is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 29. All three games will be played at Catamount Softball Complex in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
