LYNCHBURG, Va. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team upended Liberty, 7–6, at Liberty Baseball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. True freshman Cannon Lee made his first collegiate start and went five innings with only two runs allowed.
After a quiet first inning from both sides, UNCG began the scoring in the second frame with a Luke Jenkins RBI sac bunt to put the score at 1-0. The Flames answered back in the bottom half with a run of their own to knot up the score. Liberty added another run in the third frame from a two out solo shot by Jordan Jaffe to put the score at 2-1. UNCG was undaunted as Ethan Brittain blooped an RBI single that tied up the game 2-2.
Following a scoreless fifth, the Spartans battled back in the top of the sixth and retook the advantage with a Tanner Berry RBI double for the 3-2 lead. However Liberty, with two men on, tripled in the bottom half of the sixth to regain the lead, 4-3. Once again UNCG answered with a four-run top of the seventh, starting off with a Jake Mueller ground-rule double driving in Luke Holland. JJ Parsons drove in Mueller with an RBI single up the middle for the 5-4 lead. The rally continued with another Berry RBI and was capped off by a Jenkins RBI single up the middle to end the top of the seventh with UNCG up 7-4. The Flames once again answered with two runs of their own, but the clutch pitching of Jake Colucci stopped Liberty from gaining anymore runs to hold the lead at 7-6 after seven. After a quiet eighth and top of the ninth, Mayson Dear was brought in for the save up one run. The junior gave up one hit but silenced the Liberty bats with two popouts and a groundout to end the game with a 7-6 win.
