SPARTANBURG, S.C - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team lost game one of the series against Wofford, 8–7, at Russell C. King Field on Friday afternoon. The Spartans late rally saw seven runs scored in the final three innings of action but still fell short in the contest.
The game started quiet as neither side scored any runs in the first two innings. However, starter Noah Chapman was tagged in the top of the third for three runs and then an additional run in the fourth to make it 4-0 after four frames of action.
Both sides settled into a pitching duel as both teams combined for just two hits in the next two innings. The Spartans finally got the offense going in the top of the seventh, as a Tanner Berry leadoff double set up Luke Jenkins with a two-run home run, his second of the year, to cut the lead to 4-2. The Terriers answered right back with three runs of their own thanks to a Marc Quarrie home run to extend the lead, 7-2. UNCG was resilient as they scored another two runs from a Jake Barbour RBI double to cut the deficit, 7-4, heading into the bottom of the eighth. Wofford again answered with a run of its own to go into the final inning up 8-4. UNCG saw a rally late as Brantley Truitt and Ethan Brittain both singled to get the offense moving. Jacob Dilley mashed a double in the gap to score one RBI and put runners on second and third with no outs. After two sacrifice flies that brought home both runners to put the score at 7-8, Wofford sealed the deal with a strikeout to end the game 8-7.
