Softball Travels to Western Carolina for SoCon Series

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will continue The Southern Conference (SoCon) slate this weekend by traveling to Cullowhee, North Carolina, to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday and Sunday at Catamount Softball Complex.

The Spartans come into the week 22-12 overall and 3-0 in the SoCon. Western Carolina currently stands 21-9 overall and 3-0 in the league. The Spartans secured a doubleheader sweep over the Catamounts at UNCG Softball Stadium last year.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG completed a three-game sweep in its SoCon opener at ETSU with scores of 4-0, 3-2 and 9-0.
  • The three victories extended the Spartans' win streak to seven. 
  • The 9-0 victory is the 11th shutout this season for UNCG and matches the 2023 season's 11 shutouts. 
  • Brooklyn Shroyer was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season on Monday. In two appearances and two starts, Shroyer posted an 0.00 ERA, while tossing one complete game with 11.0 innings thrown. She gave up four hits, no runs, one walk and struck out 14 batters. She kept opponents to a .108 batting average.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG was voted as the favorite in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes as well as 43 points.
  • Kaylyn Belfield and Macy Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Salem Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Hadley Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
  • The 2026 roster includes 12 returners, seven freshmen and two transfers. Of the 12 returners, five started in 40 or more games last season.
  • The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
  • The Blue & Gold also have Gardner returning, who was one of three Spartans last season to hit 10 or more homers, placing her second on the team with 11 home runs.
  • Michael is the leading returner in RBI and walks, tallying 36 and 23, respectively during her freshman season.
  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
  • This was the seventh-straight season and 10th year with 30-plus wins under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is now in her 14th season at the helm.
  • Shroyer is pacing the SoCon in complete games (8), ERA (1.43), hits allowed per seven innings (3.76), innings pitched (93.0), shutouts (7), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.39), strikeouts (112), victories (11) and WHIP (0.89). She is second in the conference with 13 games started, 19 pitching appearances and 8.4 strikeouts per seven innings.
  • Shroyer is nationally ranked in the top 30 in six categories: shutouts (3rd/7), hits allowed per seven innings (12th/3.76), strikeouts (17th/112), ERA (17th/1.43), WHIP (18th/0.89), victories (26th/11) and complete games (27th/8).
  • Laney Deane is second in the league in doubles (11), doubles per game (0.32), hit by pitch (6) and RBI (39). 
  • Salem Ward is second in the SoCon with a 1.88 ERA.
  • Belfield is second in the conference with 43 hits this season.
  • UNCG is leading the SoCon in doubles (53), ERA (2.17), hit by pitch (22), hits allowed per seven innings (5.50), shutouts (4), strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.01), team strikeouts per seven innings (5.84) and WHIP (1.20).

RUNDOWN ON WESTERN CAROLINA
  • The Catamounts come into the weekend 21-9 overall and 3-0 in the SoCon, being the only other team in the league to secure a series sweep in the opening week of conference action.
  • The Catamounts are on a five-game win streak after securing the sweep over Furman last weekend and most recently notching a doubleheader victory over USC Upstate on Tuesday.
  • Western Carolina was voted to finish sixth in the 2026 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with one first-place vote.
  • Lily Bell and Sydney Dirks were named to the 2026 Preseason First Team All-SoCon.
  • Maya McPherson, Rylee Butler and Dirks were all selected to the 2026 Preseason Second Team All-SoCon.
  • Amanda Fulton is pacing the SoCon in complete games (8), pitching appearances (20) and saves (2).
  • Dirks and McPherson are leading the SoCon with 11 homers apiece and a 0.37 home runs per game average.
  • McPherson leads the league in hits (49), slugging percentage (.893) and total bases (92).
  • Dirks is pacing the conference in RBI (40) and RBI per game (1.33).
  • Bell leads the SoCon with a 1.13 runs per game average.
  • As a team, the Catamounts are leading the SoCon in hits (267), home runs (43), home runs per game (1.43), RBI per game (6.60), RBI (198) and slugging percentage (.536).
  • Western Carolina concluded the 2025 season 22-31 overall and 6-14 in the SoCon.
  • Head Coach Jim Clift is in his 15th season at the helm of the Western Carolina softball team.

UNCG will travel to Rock Hill, South Carolina, to face Winthrop on Tuesday, March 31 at 5:00 p.m. at Terry Field. The Spartans will return home for a three-game series with Furman starting with a doubleheader on Friday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m. and concluding on Saturday, April 4 at 1:00 p.m. at UNCG Softball Stadium.
