Softball & Winthrop Face Off On Tuesday in the Palmetto State

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team is set to travel to Rock Hill, South Carolina, tomorrow for a non-conference matchup against Winthrop at 5:00 p.m. at Terry Field.

UNCG is entering the game 25-12 overall and 6-0 in The Southern Conference (SoCon), while Winthrop is 21-16 overall and 7-2 in the Big South.

UNCG has the advantage in the all-time series with an 18-13 record. The game between the two was postponed in 2025. The series in 2024 was split, with UNCG winning game one, 6-1, and then Winthrop taking game two 5-4 in eight innings.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG claimed its second-straight SoCon sweep with three wins over Western Carolina.
  • The Spartans took game one, 9-5, game two, 5-3 in nine innings and then 10-4 in game three.
  • Brooklyn Shroyer earned two wins this past weekend, tossing 11.0 innings and striking out 12 batters. She allowed 10 hits and seven runs, keeping opponents to a .238 batting average.
  • Salem Ward also earned a victory over the weekend in the circle.
  • Nya South paced the Spartans with a .545 batting average, swinging 6-for-11 with three runs scored, one double, two home runs, five RBI and drew three walks.
  • Avery Bouquin, Hadley Gardner and Rylie Williams also homered in the three-game series.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG was voted as the favorite in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes as well as 43 points.
  • Kaylyn Belfield and Macy Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
  • The 2026 roster includes 12 returners, seven freshmen and two transfers. Of the 12 returners, five started in 40 or more games last season.
  • The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
  • The Blue & Gold also have Gardner returning, who was one of three Spartans last season to hit 10 or more homers, placing her second on the team with 11 home runs.
  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
  • The 2025 season was the seventh-straight year and 10th year with 30-plus wins under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is now in her 14th season at the helm.
  • The Spartans are on a 10-game win streak, which matches their streak from Feb. 13-24, earlier this year.
  • UNCG has hit a home run in 10-straight games.
  • The Spartans have recorded 10 plus hits as a team in 14 games this season.
  • South is third in the SoCon with a .396 batting average.
  • Laney Deane's 42 RBI and 11 doubles are second in the SoCon, while her 10 homers are tied for sixth.
  • Belfield is second in the SoCon with 48 hits and 33 runs scored, while her .384 batting average is seventh.
  • Shroyer is leading the SoCon in wins (13), ERA (1.75), strikeouts (124), innings pitched (104), complete games (9), shutouts (7) and opponent batting average (.165).
  • She is nationally ranked in the top 25 in six categories: shutouts (3rd/6), strikeouts (11th/102), hits allowed (17th/3.91), victories (20th/10), complete games (25th/7) and innings pitched (25th/86.0).
  • UNCG is leading the SoCon in games played (37), wins (25), ERA (2.31), strikeouts (213), innings pitched (252), earned runs (83), opponent batting average (.213), strikeouts per seven innings (5.9), hits (290), doubles (58) and fielding percentage (.971). 
RUNDOWN ON WINTHROP
  • Winthrop concluded the 2025 season 30-23 overall and 10-8 in the Big South.
  • The Eagles were voted to finish fourth in the 2026 Big South Preseason Poll.
  • Tia Beckham was named to the 2026 Big South Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Winthrop is riding a three-game win streak after sweeping a road conference series at Charleston Southern this past weekend.
  • The Eagles have won the last six of seven games.
  • Four Eagles are pacing the team with .300 or better batting averages, with Rebecca Amos leading the way with her .387 hitting clip.
  • Amos also leads the team with 48 hits, 37 runs scored and successfully stealing 15 of 19 bases.
  • Peyton Bryden has 10 doubles and 36 RBI this season to lead Winthrop.
  • Tia Beckham (9), Bryden (8), Annelisa Winebarger (8) and Darrah Nickens (7) are leading the way with home runs.
  • Lonna Addison has tossed 105.1 innings for the Eagles in the circle with a 3.79 ERA, while striking out 84 batters and has kept opponents to a .267 hitting clip. She is 12-5 overall with 10 complete games and one shutout.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will return home for a three-game series with Furman starting with a doubleheader on Friday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m. and concluding on Saturday, April 4 at 1:00 p.m. at UNCG Softball Stadium.
