GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team is set to travel to Wilmington, North Carolina, to compete in the UNCW Tournament from March 6-8 at Boseman Field.
The Spartans will face Army West Point (5-9, 0-0 Patriot League), Toledo (1-16, 0-0 MAC) and host, UNCW (9-9, 0-0 CAA) over the three days.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG has won 13 of the last 16 games, which includes a 3-0 shutout over Loyola Chicago that the Spartans won on Tuesday at UNCG Softball Stadium.
- The 3-0 victory over the Ramblers was the seventh shutout of the season for the Spartans.
- Avery Bouquin hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third, which was the eventual game-winning hit.
- Rhyann Jones and Salem Ward combined for a complete game shutout. Jones struck out three batters in 4.0 innings with just one hit allowed, while Ward retired two batters in 3.0 innings tossed and giving up two hits.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
- UNCG was voted as the favorite in the Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes with 43 points.
- Kaylyn Belfield and Macy Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Salem Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Hadley Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
- The 2026 roster includes 12 returners, seven freshmen and two transfers. Of the 12 returners, five started in 40 or more games last season.
- The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
- The Blue & Gold also have Gardner returning, who was one of three Spartans last season to hit 10 or more homers, placing her second on the team with 11 home runs.
- Michael is the leading returner in RBI and walks, tallying 36 and 23, respectively during her freshman season.
- UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
- This was the seventh-straight season and 10th year with 30-plus wins under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is now in her 14th season at the helm.
- Belfield is currently leading the Spartans with a .429 batting average with 21 runs scored and a .450 on-base percentage.
- Bouquin is second on the team with a .397 hitting clip with 15 runs scored, seven doubles and 15 RBI.
- Laney Deane is pacing the team with 27 RBI and eight doubles. She is leading the SoCon in doubles, doubles per game (0.36), hit by pitch (6) and RBI (27).
- Deane & Nya South each have five home runs to lead the team, while Michael has four blasts.
- Brooklyn Shroyer has a 2.00 ERA with a 7-3 record in 14 appearances with 63.0 innings tossed. She has struck out 77 batters and given up just 39 hits.
- Shroyer is leading the SoCon in innings pitched (63.0), pitching appearances (14), saves (1), shutouts (4), strikeouts (77) and victories (6).
- Her 77 strikeouts are eighth in the nation.
- UNCG is leading the SoCon in hit by pitch (16), home runs (19) and team strikeouts per seven innings (6.00).
RUNDOWN ON ARMY
- Army concluded the 2025 season with a 35-22 overall record and 16-2 in the Patriot League.
- The sixteen wins in conference play set a program record for most Patriot League wins in a season.
- Army also finished the season as the Patriot League regular season champion, claiming the title outright for the first time since 2010.
- The Black Knights were voted to finish second in the 2026 Patriot League Preseason Poll.
- Ashton White was voted 2026 Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year, as well as to the Preseason All-League Team.
- Army also saw Taylor Brown, Katelyn Flanders and Annie Christiana voted to the 2026 Patriot League Softball Preseason All-League Team.
- Brown is pacing the team with a .378 batting average with a team-best 17 hits and successfully stealing four of five bases.
- White is leading the Black Knights with 11 RBI and is second on the team with a .333 hitting clip.
- Brenna Izzo has thrown the most innings for Army, tossing 30.1 with 27 strikeouts leaving batters with a .191 batting average.
- The Black Knights are nationally ranked 33rd with three shutouts.
RUNDOWN ON TOLEDO
- Toledo concluded the 2025 season with a 19-28 overall mark and a 12-14 record in the MAC.
- Toledo was voted to finish sixth in the 2026 MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- Eli Enriquez is leading the Rockets with a .364 batting average and has 20 hits.
- Audrey Miller and Samantha Bolding each have nine RBI and three homers to lead the team.
- Bolding also has a team-best 11 runs scored this season.
- In the circle, Maddy Yackee has tossed 35.2 innings with 13 strikeouts and has allowed 42 hits.
- The Rockets are nationally ranked sixth with a .986 fielding percentage.
RUNDOWN ON UNCW
- UNCW concluded the 2025 season with a 28-22 overall record and a 14-13 mark in the CAA.
- UNCW was voted to finish third in the South Division of the CAA Preseason Poll.
- Madison Biddle was voted the 2026 CAA Preseason Player of the Year.
- Biddle and Cassidy Relay earned spots on the 2026 Preseason All-CAA Team, while Makayla Huddleston received Honorable Mention.
- Relay is leading the Seahawks' offense with a .518 batting average, scoring 12 runs and drawing 11 walks. She has also successfully stolen 10-of-11 bases.
- Relay is nationally ranked 26th and leading the CAA with a .597 on base percentage. She is also 38th in the nation with 10 stolen bases.
- Becca Merrick has tallied a team-best 13 RBI so far this season, while Ava Brookshire is second on the team with 10 RBI.
- Four of the Seahawks pitchers have each tossed 20 or more innings this season, with Huddleston leading the way with 32.2 innings and 39 strikeouts.
