GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team lost game two of the series to Quinnipiac, 14-11, on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans' 19 hits, which is the most in a single game this season, were not enough in the narrow defeat.
The Spartans picked up right where they left off the day before knocking in four runs in the bottom of the first, capped off by a single by Brantley Truitt to bring in two RBIs. The Bobcats answered in the top of the third with a home run off starter JT Weaver, but UNCG responded with a run of its own thanks to an RBI single by Ethan Brittain to bring the score to 5-1 after three innings of action. The Spartans' bats continued to roll as Luke Jenkins mashed a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 7-1.
In the fifth, Weaver was replaced by Ethan Nobles after going four innings with six hits, three runs given up and three strikeouts. However, the freshman ran into trouble with five hits combined with two UNCG errors resulting in five runs before fresh reliever, Thomas Hester, was able to stop the bleeding at 7-6. The Spartans put across another insurance run in the bottom half of the inning with a Tanner Berry sacrifice fly to bring the score to 8-6 after five. The Bobcats' offense continued to pour it on as an eight-run top of the seventh resulted in Quinnipiac taking the lead, 14-8. UNCG was able to mount a small comeback in the bottom of seventh and eighth frames, highlighted by Luke Holland knocking in two RBIs and Jake Barbour adding an additional run to make the score 14-11 entering the final inning. The Blue & Gold's bats were silenced in the in final frame as they went one-two-three to end the game.
