GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell in extra innings to Quinnipiac, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. Starting pitcher Hunter Shuey eclipsed his career-high with 10 strikeouts on the day.
The game started out slow for both sides as each starting pitcher came into this one dealing. UNCG's Shuey had a career day with 10 strikeouts in six innings of work, five hits, two runs allowed and one walk. The Bobcats opened the scoring in the top of the third with back-to-back singles and an error to put the score at 1-0. UNCG answered in the bottom of the fourth, with a double from Brody Gardner knocking in two RBIs to make the score 2-1 Spartans. The top of the fifth saw Quinnipiac's bats push another run across to tie the score at two apiece. Jake Barbour led off in the bottom of the sixth and mashed a home run to give UNCG the lead of 3-2.
Both offenses were silenced until the top of the ninth, when the Bobcats loaded the bases and a throwing error by the Spartans tied up the game. Relief pitcher, Luke Thomas entered the game with the bases juiced and one retired but got out of the inning. The UNCG offense was unable to get anything going in the bottom of the ninth, which pushed the game into extra innings. Neither side gained ground until the 11th frame when Quinnipiac pushed across two runs to make the score 5-3 entering the bottom half. After a walk, the Bobcats were able to close the door with three straight outs to end the game at 5-3.
