HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell in a nailbiter against non-conference foe Northern Kentucky, 4–3, at Bill Aker Baseball Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans had two runners on with no outs in the top of the ninth but clutch Norse pitching and fielding stopped the potential tying run from scoring.
Game three began as a pitcher's duel early as UNCG's J.T. Weaver was locked in from the get-go. Weaver only allowed one hit in the first three innings of action as the Spartans got on the board first in the top of fourth with a Jacob Budzik RBI single, 1-0. Northern Kentucky responded in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run off Weaver to tie up the game at one apiece.
The Blue and Gold got the offense rolling in the fifth inning as a Brody Gardner walk, a Jake Mueller single and a Jacob Dilley walk loaded the bases. The Norse defense buckled under the pressure as back-to-back passed balls scored two Spartan base runners to put UNCG back on top, 3-1. Northern Kentucky took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Weaver tagged for three runs in the frame, 4-3. The Spartan offense was silenced until the top of the ninth as Ethan Brittain and Dilley got on base with no outs. However, the Norse retired three straight UNCG batters to end the game at 4-3.
