GREENSBORO, N.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dropped game one of the three-game series against The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Samford, 11–5, at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Friday night. Jake Mueller led the way for the offense, going 3-for-5 on the night.
Samford got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second to give the Bulldogs the early advantage. The Spartans responded in the bottom half of the inning as Jacob Dilley mashed a three-run home run, his fifth of the season, to give UNCG the 3-2 lead. The game turned into a pitcher's duel as ace Noah Chapman battled Samford's number one, Joseph Lee , with two scoreless innings. The Bulldogs got the offense rolling again in the top of the fifth as a two RBI single gave the lead back to Samford, 4-3.
Chapman lasted one more inning but ended his night after six innings of work with nine hits, four runs and six strikeouts. Jake Colucci entered in relief for the seventh inning but gave up one run in the frame with another run in the eighth for a 6-3 deficit. UNCG rallied in the bottom of the eighth with Jacob Budzik blasting a two-run shot into right field to cut the lead down to one run, 6-5. However, the Bulldogs snuffed out any comeback attempt as they put up five runs in the top of the ninth to go up 11-5. The Spartans were unable to put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth to end the game at 11-5.
