Softball to Battle Mercer in SoCon Series

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team continues a four-game homestand, welcoming The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Mercer for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at UNCG Softball Stadium.

On Saturday, the two teams will play a doubleheader with the first game starting at 1:00 p.m. and on Sunday they will play a single game with a first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. The Bears, who won the 2025 SoCon Tournament and appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season, went 3-1 against the Spartans last year, which included a matchup during the SoCon Tournament.

With the 31-15 overall record, this is the eighth straight 30-win season for the Spartans, with the exception of the 2020 COVID-19 season and 11th time under the direction of 14-year Head Coach Janelle Breneman.

All regular season softball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Softball Stadium are open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG claimed a 14-1 five-inning victory over Longwood on Wednesday at UNCG Softball Stadium.
  • This was the 16th game this season where the Spartans registered 10 or more hits in a game, totaling 11 against Longwood.
  • UNCG's eight walks is a game high and matches the Spartans' total against ETSU on March 22.
  • Jazmin Mejia went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored.
  • Macy Michael went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, three RBI and her ninth homer of the season.
  • Nya South went 1-for-2 with one run scored, four RBI and her 13th home run of the season.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG was voted as the favorite in SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes as well as 43 points.
  • Kaylyn Belfield and Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Salem Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Hadley Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
  • The 2026 roster includes 12 returners, seven freshmen and two transfers. Of the 12 returners, five started in 40 or more games last season.
  • The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
  • The Blue & Gold also have Gardner returning, who was one of three Spartans last season to hit 10 or more homers, placing her second on the team with 11 home runs.
  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
  • The 2025 season was the seventh-straight year and 10th year with 30-plus wins under the direction of Coach Breneman.
  • UNCG has had two 10-game winning streaks, the first was from Feb. 13-24 and the second stretch was from March 13-29.
  • The Spartans have recorded 10 plus hits as a team in 16 games this season.
  • Brooklyn Shroyer is pacing the SoCon in ERA (1.83), hits allowed per seven innings (4.25), shutouts (7), strikeouts (140), victories (15) and WHIP (0.97).
  • Shroyer is nationally ranked in the top 25 in five categories: shutouts (4th/7), hits allowed per seven innings (13th/4.25), strikeouts (20th/140), WHIP (22nd/0.97) and victories (23rd/15).
  • Avery Bouquin is second in the SoCon with 12 doubles and second with 0.29 doubles per game.
  • Belfield is second in the conference in hits with 56 and 68th nationally.  
  • UNCG is leading the SoCon in doubles (70), ERA (2.32), hits (349), hits allowed per seven innings (5.73), strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.96), team strikeouts per seven innings (5.70) and WHIP (1.23).
RUNDOWN ON MERCER
  • Mercer concluded the 2025 season with a 40-26 record overall and 11-9 in SoCon play.
  • The Bears tallied their first conference crown in the 40-year history of the program.
  • Mercer was voted to finish fifth in the 2026 SoCon Preseason Poll.
  • Grace Jones was selected to the 2026 SoCon Preseason Second Team.
  • Olivia Lenzen (.389), Jones (.316) and Daniella Monaco (.308) are the three Bears with a .300 or better average.
  • Isabel Fernandez is leading the team stealing 13 of 14 bases this season.
  • Avery Barton has hit 11 homers this season and has tallied 26 RBI to lead the team.
  • Katheryn Rearley has thrown the most innings for the Bears, tossing 58.0 frames in 19 appearances.
  • Jones leads the team with 45 strikeouts in the circle, keeping opponents at a .284 batting average.

UP NEXT
UNCG will travel to Buies Creek, North Carolina, to battle Campbell on Wednesday, April 22 at 5:00 p.m. at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

The Spartans will then host SoCon foe Chattanooga on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26 for their final home series of the regular season.
