Softball to Battle Furman in SoCon Series Friday & Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will welcome The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Furman on Friday and Saturday to begin a four-game homestand at UNCG Softball Stadium.

On Friday, the two teams will play a doubleheader with the first game starting at 1:00 p.m. and on Saturday they will play a single game with a first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.

Currently, the Spartans are 25-13 overall and 6-0 in the SoCon and the Paladins are 5-28 overall and 0-6 in the conference. UNCG has swept the last two series against Furman. The Paladins last claimed wins on April 6, 2023, with scores of 5-4 in nine innings and 9-8 in Greenville, South Carolina.

All regular season softball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Softball Stadium are open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG fell to non-conference foe Winthrop on Tuesday in Rock Hill, South Carolina, 4-2.
  • Kaylyn Belfield went 2-for-4 and Avery Bouquin hit a perfect 3-for-3. They were the only two Spartans with multi-hit games.
  • Salem Ward struck out five batters in her 4.2 innings of work, while Nadia Andarowski retired two in her 1.1 innings thrown.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG was voted as the favorite in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes as well as 43 points.
  • Belfield and Macy Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Hadley Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
  • The 2026 roster includes 12 returners, seven freshmen and two transfers. Of the 12 returners, five started in 40 or more games last season.
  • The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
  • The Blue & Gold also have Gardner returning, who was one of three Spartans last season to hit 10 or more homers, placing her second on the team with 11 home runs.
  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
  • The 2025 season was the seventh-straight year and 10th year with 30-plus wins under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is now in her 14th season at the helm.
  • UNCG has had two 10-game winning streaks, the first was from Feb. 13-24 and the second stretch was from March 13-29.
  • The Spartans have recorded 10 plus hits as a team in 14 games this season.
  • Belfield is fifth in the SoCon with a team-best .388 batting average, while Nya South is sixth with her .386 hitting clip.
  • Laney Deane's 42 RBI and 11 doubles are second in the SoCon, while her 10 homers are tied for sixth.
  • Belfield is second in the SoCon with 50 hits and 33 runs scored.
  • Shroyer is leading the SoCon in complete games (9), ERA (1.75), games started (14), hits allowed per seven innings (4.04), innings pitched (104.0), shutouts (7), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.44), strikeouts (124), strikeouts per seven innings (8.3), victories (13) and WHIP (0.92).
  • She is nationally ranked in the top 25 in six categories: shutouts (3rd/7), hits allowed per seven innings (12th/4.04), strikeouts (16th/124), victories (16th/13), WHIP (18th/0.92) and complete games (25th/9).
  • UNCG is leading the SoCon in games played (37), wins (25), ERA (2.31), strikeouts (213), innings pitched (252), earned runs (83), opponent batting average (.213), strikeouts per seven innings (5.9), hits (290), doubles (58) and fielding percentage (.971).
 
RUNDOWN ON FURMAN
  • Furman concluded the 2025 season, 15-38 overall and 5-16 in the SoCon.
  • Furman was voted to finish eighth in the 2026 SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Sylvia Burroughs was selected to the 2026 Preseason All-SoCon First Team.
  • The Paladins have lost their last six games, dropping three-game series to Western Carolina and ETSU.
  • Furman split a doubleheader with USC Upstate on March 17, claiming a 14-2 five-inning victory for the most recent win.
  • Four from Furman are swinging .300 or better at the plate, including Burroughs with a .341 batting average to lead the team.
  • Burroughs is also leading the Paladins with 18 RBI, four homers and 15 walks.
  • Rachel Hawkins and Christina McCoy each four home runs, as well.
  • Katie Peeler has successfully stolen nine-of-nine bases this season.
  • In the circle, Kristyn Embler has tossed 70.0 innings, giving up 122 hits, with 36 strikeouts. She has a 4-9 record with 14 appearances and five complete games.
  • As a team, Furman is second in the conference in double plays (11) and double plays per game (.33).

The Spartans will host in-state non-conference foe Charlotte for a single game on Wednesday, April 8, at UNCG Softball Stadium with a first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m. Fans can play softball bingo during the game, and kids can run the bases and postgame autographs following the conclusion of the game.
