GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will welcome in Charlotte on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. for a midweek contest at UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans come into the contest 27-14 overall and 8-1 in The Southern Conference (SoCon), sitting atop the conference standings. The Spartans took the last meeting with the Niners, 7-5, in Greensboro on Oct. 25, 2024.
All regular season softball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Softball Stadium are open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG went 2-1 in its series against Furman at UNCG Softball Stadium this past weekend.
- The Spartans claimed the doubleheader wins on Friday, 8-0 and 11-2, but fell on Saturday, 3-0.
- The 8-0 six-inning victory was the Spartans' 12th shutout of the season. This is the most shutouts since 2018 when UNCG had 14. UNCG then defeated the Paladins 11-2 in five innings.
- Brooklyn Shroyer led the Spartans in the circle as she struck out seven batters in the first three innings of play in game one.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
- UNCG was voted as the favorite in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes as well as 43 points.
- Kaylyn Belfield and Macy Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Salam Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Hadley Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
- The 2026 roster includes 12 returners, seven freshmen and two transfers. Of the 12 returners, five started in 40 or more games last season.
- The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
- The Blue & Gold also have Gardner returning, who was one of three Spartans last season to hit 10 or more homers, placing her second on the team with 11 home runs.
- UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
- The 2025 season was the seventh-straight year and 10th year with 30-plus wins under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is now in her 14th season at the helm.
- UNCG has had two 10-game winning streaks, the first was from Feb. 13-24 and the second stretch was from March 13-29.
- The Spartans have recorded 10 plus hits as a team in 15 games this season.
- Shroyer is pacing the SoCon in ERA (1.67), hits allowed per seven innings (4.05), shutouts (7), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.62), strikeouts (134), strikeouts per seven innings (8.6), victories (14) and WHIP (0.92).
- She is second in the conference in games started (15) and innings pitched (109.0).
- Shroyer is nationally ranked in the top 25 in six categories: shutouts (3rd/7), hits allowed per seven innings (13th/4.05), WHIP (16th/0.92), strikeouts (17th/134), victories (18th/14), ERA (22nd/1.67) and strikeouts per seven innings (25th/8.6)
- Laney Deane is second in the league in doubles (12) and RBIs (46).
- Ward is second in the SoCon with a 2.05 ERA.
- Belfield is second in the conference in hits with 52.
- UNCG is leading the SoCon in doubles (65), doubles per game (1.59), ERA (2.23), hits (323), hits allowed per seven innings (5.55), strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.13), team strikeouts per seven innings (5.93) and WHIP (1.19).
- The Spartans are second in the league in hit by pitch (27), home runs (42), shutouts (5) and slugging percentage (.477).
RUNDOWN ON CHARLOTTE
- The Niners come to Greensboro with a 22-18 overall and a 7-8 mark in the American Conference.
- Charlotte went 1-2 in its series at East Carolina last weekend. The team fell 6-4 and 2-0 on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, but secured the 8-1 win on Friday in Greenville, North Carolina.
- The Niners are currently ranked fourth in the country in double plays with 25 this season and fifth in double plays per game at 0.63.
- Jenna Lord is leading the American Conference in doubles (12) and hits (53).
- She also paces the team with a .431 batting average, a .732 slugging percentage, two triples and 90 total bases.
- Audrey Wilson is leading the league in RBIs per game (1.05).
- Taegan Ritchie leads the Niners in homers with 10 this season.
- Aubrey Yarnell stands out in the circle for Charlotte with a 3.52 ERA.
- Head Coach Courtney Breault is in her second season at the helm of the Charlotte softball program and led the team to a 30-27 overall record and 17-10 conference finish last season.
- The Niners were picked to finish fourth in the 2026 American Conference Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll.
