GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will conclude the regular season with The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Samford on Saturday and Sunday at Samford Softball Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Spartans head to Birmingham with a 37-16 overall record and 15-3 mark in the SoCon, standing at first place in the conference standings. Samford sits at second in the SoCon with a 25-27 overall record and 13-5 league record.
If the Spartans win one game out of the three this weekend, they will secure the 2026 SoCon Regular Season title and the number one seed into the 2026 SoCon Softball Tournament.
UNCG claimed last season's series against Samford winning two of three games in Greensboro from April 12-13 at UNCG Softball Stadium. The two teams last met on May 8, 2025, in the 2025 SoCon Tournament with the Bulldogs claiming the 5-4 win in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
With the 37-16 overall record, this is the eighth straight 30-win season for the Spartans, with the exception of the 2020 COVID-19 season and 11
th time under the direction of 14-year Head Coach

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG went 2-1 in its final home series of the season against Chattanooga this past weekend.
- The Spartans secured the doubleheader sweep on Saturday with scores of 7-3 and 9-1 (five innings), but fell on Sunday, 3-2.
- The win in game two was Breneman's 600th career win as a head coach.
- The Spartans had 11 hits in game two, which marks the 20th game this season with double-figure base knocks.
- Nya South was named SoCon Player of the Week this past Monday after averaging .545 at the plate, going 6-for-11 with three runs scored, two doubles and two home runs.
- In addition, South paced the Spartans with eight RBI and three walks, while striking out just once.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
- UNCG was voted as the favorite in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2026 season. The Spartans earned four first-place votes as well as 43 points.
- Kaylyn Belfield and Macy Michael were voted to the Preseason All-SoCon First Team. Salem Ward, juniors Samantha Beck and Betsy Eatmon and sophomore Hadley Gardner all earned Preseason All-SoCon Second Team recognition.
- The Spartans return Belfield, who led the Spartans with a UNCG single season batting average record of .431.
- UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 39-18 overall record and a 14-6 SoCon mark.
- UNCG has had two 10-game winning streaks, the first was from Feb. 13-24 and the second stretch was from March 13-29.
- The Spartans have recorded 10 plus hits as a team in 20 games this season.
- UNCG has 14 shutouts this season, matching the 2018 mark.
- Brooklyn Shroyer is pacing the SoCon in hits allowed per seven innings (4.12), ERA (1.67), shutouts (8), strikeouts (153), victories (17) and WHIP (0.94).
- Shroyer stands out in the top-25 nationally among six categories: shutouts (3rd), hits allowed per seven innings (8th), WHIP (16th), ERA (16th), strikeouts (24th), victories (25th) and strikeouts per seven innings (37th).
- Avery Bouquin is leading the conference in doubles (15) and doubles per game (0.31).
- Michael is second in the league in doubles per game (0.30).
- South is second in the conference with a .508 on base percentage and a .771 slugging percentage.
- Belfield stands out at second in the SoCon with a 0.92 runs per game average.
- UNCG is leading the SoCon in doubles (85), doubles per game (1.60), ERA (2.19), hits allowed per seven innings (5.65), strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.92), team strikeouts per seven innings (5.49), WHIP (1.22) and win-loss percentage (.698).
- The Spartans rank in the top-50 nationally among seven categories: ERA (8th), hits allowed per seven innings (12th), WHIP (15th), doubles per game (22nd), win-loss percentage (39th), strikeout-to-walk ratio (43rd) and shutouts (48th).
RUNDOWN ON SAMFORD
- The Bulldogs are 8-1 over their last nine games after most recently going 2-1 at ETSU last weekend.
- Samford claimed a 5-3 win on Thursday and 2-0 win on Friday, but fell in Friday's second game to the Bucs, 7-0.
- The Bulldogs were picked to finish second in SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with two first-place votes.
- Olivia Shaw was tabbed as the 2026 SoCon Preseason Player of the Year, while Shaw, Katie Campbell and Joi Hubbard were all named to the Preseason First-Team All-SoCon.
- Shaw is currently leading the league in doubles (15) and is second in sacrifice flies (4).
- Campbell leads the SoCon in home runs (18) and home runs per game (0.35). She is second in total bases (120).
- Hubbard is second in the conference in hit by pitch (13) and hit by pitch per game (0.28).
- Makinley Turner stands out in the circle for the Bulldogs, leading the team with 29 strikeouts and second in the SoCon with four shutouts and a 5.76 average on hits allowed per seven innings.
- The Bulldogs are pacing the SoCon in hit by pitch (41) and shutouts (8), while the team is second in fielding percentage (.971), hits allowed per seven innings (7.51), triples (12) and triples per game (0.23).
- Samford concluded the 2025 season 33-23 overall and 12-7 in the SoCon.
- Head Coach Megan Curry is in her fifth season at the helm of the Samford softball program, leading the team to an 109-111 record during her time.
