CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell to The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Western Carolina, 4–1, at Hennon Field on Friday afternoon. Jacob Budzik led the way with three hits in the contest.
Right-hander Mayson Dear got the nod for the Spartans in game two where he went three innings with six hits allowed and four runs given up. Neither offense got anything going until the bottom of the third when Western Carolina struck with an RBI sacrifice fly to open the score up, 1-0.
The Catamounts extended their lead with a three-run home run by Noah Quarless, 4-0. Dear was relieved by Cannon Lee who strung together five innings with no runs allowed, no walks, four hits and a career-high seven strikeouts. The Spartan offense threatened in the seventh and eighth frames with runners in scoring position but were checked by the Catamounts' pitching staff. UNCG rallied in the top of the ninth, as an error and a single put runners on first and third with no outs. Luke Holland then delivered the Spartans only run of the game with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1. Western Carolina ended the game with a double play to have the final score of 4-1.
