Baseball Looks to Continue Hot Streak at Virginia Tech

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team travels to Virginia Tech for two games this weekend at English Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia. Game one begins at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday with game two starting at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

 LAST TIME OUT               

  • The Spartans secured The Southern Conference (SoCon) series sweep against VMI this past weekend at UNCG Baseball Stadium.   

  • The offense was led by Jacob Budzik who drove in nine RBIs with two home runs this past week.   

  • Jake Mueller extended his on-base streak to 34 games.   

  • The pitching staff was headlined by closer John Horton, who tied for the national lead last week in saves with three. He was the first Spartan since Patrick Currin in 2006 to have three saves in a week.  
         

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS                  

  • The Spartans enter the two-game set with a 20-28 overall record and 14-16 in non-conference matchups.         

  • The Spartans enter the weekend on a five-game win streak, which is the longest since 2024 (Apr. 20- May 5) with a nine-game streak.  

  • Mueller, Budzik and Jacob Dilley combined for 25 RBIs in the last five games played.   

  • UNCG is nationally ranked in: triples (16th/15), triples per game (26th/ 0.33) and sacrifice flies (34th/26).        

  • The Spartans are 17-1 this season when leading after the seventh inning. 

  • Budzik leads the team and is tied for sixth in the SoCon in doubles with 16.       

  • Mueller leads the team in hits with 62.  

  • Freshman Tanner Berry has been hitting .370 with 44 hits, 25 RBIs and seven doubles since entering the lineup against Pittsburgh on Feb. 28.     

  • Since becoming a qualified hitter, Berry ranks 88th (10th best as a catcher) in the nation in batting average (.370) and 111th in the country in on-base percentage (.473).    

  • Brantley Truitt paces the team in stolen bases with 17 on the season. He is also two hits shy of 100 career hits at UNCG.  

  • Noah Chapman is one of the premier strikeout pitchers in the SoCon. He leads the team and is ranked third in the SoCon with 72 strikeouts.    

  • Chapman currently sits at 185 career strikeouts for UNCG.   

  • Out of the bullpen, Ayden West has been dominant with a 3.54 ERA in 20 appearances with 23 strikeouts.   

  • The Spartans were voted to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.                              

  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 21-33 overall record and went 9-12 in SoCon play.                   

  • Head Coach Cody Ellis is in his third season at the helm of the Spartans, guiding them to a 72-84 record during his time.                   

                
SCOUTING THE HOKIES   

  • Virginia Tech enters the weekend with a 26-21 overall record and 16-8 in home games.  

  • The Hokies most recently bested Liberty, 8-4, on Wednesday night.  

  • Virginia Tech ranks nationally in: fielding percentage (35th/ .978) and strikeouts per nine (37th/ 9.8).  

  • The pitching staff is headlined by Brett Renfrow, who, in 12 starts, is ranked 51st in the nation in strikeouts (81), 53rd in strikeouts-per-nine (11.74) and 86th in strikeout to walk ratio (4.00).  

  • The offense is led by Ethan Ball who is swinging a .301 clip with 43 RBIs, 14 doubles and 12 home runs.  

  • Same Grube paces the team in stolen bases with seven this year.  

  • Head Coach John Szefc continues his ninth season at the helm of the program with a 249-195 record.

The Spartans trail the series 5-7 against the Hokies. Virginia Tech took the last series matchup between the two, winning two-of-three in Blacksburg, Virginia, in 2025.
