Baseball Hammers Past Virginia Tech, 18-13

According to our records, the six home runs is a new game record since the previous mark of five set in 2005 against VMI.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team slugged past Virginia Tech, 18–13, at English Field at Union Park on Saturday afternoon. Luke Jenkins led the way with two long balls in the contest, as UNCG set a new program record with six home runs in the game.

The Spartans jumped out to a quick lead as Jacob Budzik drove in Brantley Truitt on a single for a quick 1-0 lead. However, the Hokies answered right back with two RBIs in the bottom half of the first inning, 2-1. UNCG was unfazed as Jenkins tied up the game with a solo shot in the second frame, his fifth home run of the season, to tie the game. The back-and-forth battle continued as Virginia Tech retook the lead, 3-2, after an RBI single.  In the top of the third, Jacob Dilley notched his ninth home run of the season with a two-run blast to put UNCG back on top, 4-3.

However, the Hokies once again answered with three runs in the bottom of the third, off two separate home runs, to take the lead right back. The Spartans were once again undaunted by the deficit as they responded with five runs in the top of the fourth. Jake Mueller drove in two RBIs with a single, then Budzik launched a three-run long ball to dead centerfield, his ninth of the campaign, to take the lead, 9-6. Virginia Tech once again climbed back into the ball game with one run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth inning to knot up the score once again, 9-9. However, with a solo home run from Mueller in the sixth and a three-run dinger from Jenkins in the seventh gave UNCG the lead they would not relinquish, 13-9. The Hokies tried to respond with a run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead down to 13-10, but the Spartans put the game away in the top of the eighth frame with a Luke Holland three run long ball, his third of the season, for a 16-10 advantage. UNCG added two runs in the top of the ninth for an 18-10 advantage heading into the bottom half. John Horton, after giving up a three-run blast, shut the door with three straight outs for an 18-13 win.
