Women’s Soccer Blanks Radford, 3-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout victory over non-conference foe Radford on Sunday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

The Spartans controlled the opening half, outshooting the Highlanders, 9-2, and holding a 59-41 possession percentage, but the match remained scoreless at the break.   

UNCG broke through in the 51st minute when Abby Cover found the back left corner after Rina Ogimoto found her inside the 18-yard box giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. The Blue & Gold continued to apply pressure and doubled their advantage at 72:51, as Madison Bass scored off assists from Summer Kaufman and Laney Smith.

Smith capped the scoring in the 81st minute, with an unassisted goal for a 3-0 lead. She headed it under the crossbar after the Highlanders miss cleared the corner kick.

At 83:27, Blythe Clark made her only save of the game after a breakaway one-on-one situation to keep Radford from putting a tally on the board.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UNCG outshot Radford, 25-4, including a 13-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Spartans earned six corner kicks, while the Highlanders recorded two.
  • Cover netted the game-winning goal, the first goal of her career.
  • Bass and Smith each scored their second goals of the season.
  • Smith also recorded the second assist of the year.
  • Kaufman tallied her second helper of the season.
  • Ogimoto registered her first assist of the season and fourth of her career.
  • This was the second shutout of the season for UNCG.

The Spartans will hit the road for their next three contests. First, they will head to Washington, D.C., to battle American University on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Reeves Field. They will then go to Harrison, Virginia, to play James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Sentara Park.
