WASHINGTON, D.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over non-conference opponent American on Thursday afternoon at Reeves Field.
The first shot on goal of the game came in the 17th minute with a strike from Summer Kaufman and American responded with one of its own in the 28th minute, but Blythe Clark was there for the save. The Spartans then struck first in the 36th minute when Avery Barr headed the ball past the Eagles' goalkeeper off a set piece around the 25-yard mark from Madison Bass.
UNCG continued to generate chances in the second half, and the Spartans were able to double their lead in the 85th minute. Following back-to-back blocked shots by Merle Greulich, Rina Ogimoto collected the rebound and fired a shot across the line for a 2-0 advantage at 84:07.
American countered in the 88th minute, as Lauren Sanders netted a penalty goal, cutting the deficit, 2-1. The Eagles were able to get three more shots off in the final three minutes, but the Spartan defense kept American off the board to clinch a 2-1 victory.
