HARRISONBURG, VA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team earned a hard-fought five-set victory over George Mason on Saturday afternoon, 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 15-13), as part of the LD&B Insurance Invitational, hosted by James Madison in the Convocation Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – UNCG broke open a close opening set with a 7-2 run to build a 20-16 lead. The Spartans closed the frame with four straight points, capped off by a kill from
Allie Sweet, for a 25-19 victory.
Set 2 – The Spartans sprinted out to a 9-4 advantage and later used a 4-0 surge to turn a one-point lead into a 20-16 cushion. George Mason rallied to tie the set at 20, but UNCG answered with a 5-2 finish. Sweet delivered two kills in the closing stretch, including the set-winning point for the 25-22 win.
Set 3 – After trailing 8-6 early, UNCG rallied to take a 17-15 lead. The Patriots responded with a 10-4 run to claim the 25-22 set and narrow the match deficit.
Set 4 – George Mason used a 6-0 run to gain a 14-8 lead. UNCG pulled within three late in the set, 24-21, but the Patriots forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-21 win.
Set 5 – The Spartans opened the final set on a 6-2 run and led 8-6 before George Mason tied the score at eight. UNCG answered with kills from
Hailey Clifton, Sweet and
Kendall Lanclos, then a Lanclos service ace, to regain control. Sweet sealed the match with a kill for the 15-13 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sweet recorded her 28th career double-double and fifth of the season with a season-best 29 kills and adding 16 digs.
- Lanclos matched her career-best with 16 kills.
- Clifton added 10 kills to round out the Spartans with double-digit kills.
- Izora Gragg led the match with 53 assists.
- Chloe Nussbaum paced the Spartans with three service aces and matched her season-best of 26 digs.
- Connore' Siler-Nixon and Gragg paced UNCG with four blocks apiece.
