SoCon Announces Women's Golfer of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Elle Burnette of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's golf team has been named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
Burnette tied for third place out of 54 competitors at the Tiger Classic on Aug. 24, hosted by Clemson at Walker Course in Clemson, South Carolina. In the Spartans' season-opening tournament, the senior posted a three-under-par (69) score to lead round one, before her even-par (72) performance in round two. The Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, native tied for second in par threes with a 2.88 average, tied for fifth with seven birdies and seventh in par fours with a 4.00 average.
"This is such an honor for me as a student-athlete, let alone as a senior," stated Burnette. "Hard work pays off, even when it's not always in the way we planned. I can't thank my support system enough – I couldn't do this without my family, both at home and at school. They are the reason I am who I am."
The team carded rounds of 296-297 to finish the 36-hole tournament at 17-over-par (593). Clemson claimed the team title with a three-over-par (579). The Spartans finished ahead of in-state rivals Western Carolina, who placed seventh with a 30-over-par (606), and UNC Asheville, who earned eighth place with a 46-over-par (622).
