CLEMSON, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team fell in a close battle to Clemson, 3-1 (22-25, 20-25, 25-28, 23-25), on Friday evening in the opening match of the Clemson Invitational at Jervey Gym.
Allie Sweet and
Chloe Nussbaum both reached career milestones in tonight's match against the Tigers. Sweet paced the Spartans with 16 kills to secure 1,000 career kills, while after leading UNCG with 19 digs, Nussbaum reached 1,000 career digs.
The last time UNCG took a set against a power-conference opponent was in 2018 when that squad defeated Wake Forest, 3-1, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – UNCG used a 4-0 run to turn a 6-3 deficit into a 7-6 advantage. Clemson answered with five straight points after the Spartans built a 12-9 lead. Trailing 22-18 late in the set, UNCG rallied for three consecutive points to pull within one, 22-21, but Clemson held on for a 25-22 win.
Set 2 – Clemson opened the frame with three straight points before the Spartans answered with a 4-0 run to take a 4-3 lead. UNCG later broke a 6-6 tie with six unanswered points for a 12-6 advantage. Clemson responded with a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 17-15, and used another 3-0 stretch to extend its advantage to 20-16. The Tigers closed out the set, 25-20.
Set 3 – With the score tied at 13, UNCG took control with a 4-0 run, highlighted by kills from
Connore' Siler-Nixon and
Kendall Lanclos, to build a 17-13 lead. The Spartans pushed their advantage to 20-13 before Clemson scored three straight. UNCG answered by claiming the final three points of the set, capped by a Siler-Nixon kill, for a 25-18 victory.
Set 4 – The Spartans started quickly, scoring the first three points and taking a 5-2 lead. Clemson tied the set at five before UNCG rebuilt a four-point edge, 14-10. The Tigers responded with eight consecutive points to take an 18-14 lead. UNCG fought back late, scoring four-straight points to erase a 23-19 deficit and tie the set at 23. Clemson scored the final two points to secure the 25-23 set win and the match.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sweet registered her 24th career double-double and first of the season with 16 kills and 18 digs, while adding three blocks.
- Siler-Nixon totaled 14 kills on a .310 hitting percentage.
- Izora Gragg paced the offense with 38 assists, while adding nine digs and one service ace.
- Nussbaum posted 19 digs, added five assists and one ace.
- Lanclos recorded 11 kills and set a career-high with 50 attacks.
- Ella Burd registered a career-high 10 digs.
- The Spartans totaled 51 kills, four service aces and 73 digs.
