FAIRFAX, Va. - The UNCG women's soccer team rebounded from its disappointing loss to George Mason Friday night with a impressive 2-0 shutout victory over William & Mary in the consolation match of the 2002 George Mason Invitational.
"I am really proud of the girls," said head coach Eddie Radwanski. "The team really picked it up in the second-half and took it to them (William & Mary). That was a very good team."
The Tribe (4-1) seemed to have the better of play in the opening half, but Spartan goalkeeper Angie Rudy (Sr./Doylestown, Pa.) was equal to the task. Rudy faced eight William & Mary shots, but recorded four saves to keep the game scoreless heading into intermission.
UNCG (3-2) really took control of the match midway though the second-half. The Spartans finally broke through on the score board when Cara Hammond (Fr./Howell, N.J.) tallied her team-leading third goal of the season. Rakel Logad?ttir (So./ Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) beat a defender to break free down the left side of the field. Logad?ttir sent in a beautiful ball that Hammond got on the end off. Hammond's diving header beat William & Mary netminder Nikki Villott from eight yards out. It was Logad?ttir's fourth assist of the season.
The Spartans added to its lead when Meg Barrett (Sr./Elon College, N.C.) scored her first goal of the season. Hammond found Barrett alone near the top of the penalty area. Barrett took the pass and beat Villott right under the cross bar.
Rudy started the match, but gave way to Jennifer Stillman (Fr./Randolph, N.J.). Stillman and the rest of the UNCG defense held up its end of the bargain to register its third shutout of the season. Stillman made two saves in the second-half.
The Spartans return to action Friday night, September 20, when UNCG opens up Southern Conference play at East Tennessee State. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. The Spartans lead the all-time series, 7-0.
