GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chattanooga used a pair of first-half goals to get past UNCG, 2-0, in Southern Conference women's soccer action from UNCG Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Lady Mocs upped their record to 6-2-0 overall (2-1-0 SoCon), while the Spartans dropped their fourth straight match and fell to 4-6-0 (1-3-0 SoCon).
Chattanooga grabbed an early lead at the 22:05 mark of the first half. Ashley Meager played a long ball into the UNCG defense that Diana Jallo flicked to an on-running Dusty Griffy. Griffy then went one-on-one with Jennifer Stillman (Fr./Randolph, N.J.) and beat the UNCG netminder with a blast into the lower corner.
The Spartans found themselves down for the second straight match, despite controlling much of the play. UNCG might have out-shot the Lady Mocs, but Chattanooga had the better scoring opportunities.
The Lady Mocs did not sit on their lead. Chattanooga continued to counter attack and was awarded with a free kick just outside the penalty area. Amelie Fogelberg took the ensuing free kick and rifled it past Stillman into the upper corner to give the Lady Mocs a two-goal cushion.
The two-goal lead proved too much for the Spartans to overcome. UNCG did manage some quality scoring chances in the game's waning minutes, but Chattanooga goalkeeper Rawlslyn Ray kept UNCG off the scoreboard. Ray registered 10 saves for the afternoon and picked up her fourth shutout of the season.
The victory for Chattanooga over UNCG marked the first such victory for the Lady Mocs over the Spartans. Chattanooga had dropped all five previous meetings in the all-time series. UNCG had outscored the Lady Mocs, 25-1, in those meetings.
UNCG does not return to action until next weekend when they travel to face non-conference foes Air Force and Colorado College. The Spartans and Falcons play Friday, October 4th, at 5 pm. UNCG and Colorado College will kick-off Sunday afternoon, October 6th, at 2 p.m. It will be the first-ever meetings with both schools.
