Spartans Record 16th Straight Win Over A Nonconference Foe In Fleming Gymnasium With An 83-71 Victory Over Guilford

James Maye led UNCG with 23 points

GREENSBORO, NC – James Maye poured in a game-high 23 points to lead the UNC Greensboro men's basketball team to an 83-71 victory over crosstown rival Guilford College Tuesday night in Fleming Gymnasium. The win improves UNCG to 5-12 on the season, while Guilford slips to 6-9.

Jay Joseph scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half to lead UNCG to a 47-33 advantage at the intermission. Joseph, coming off a 33-point performance against Georgia Southern, hit three first half 3-pointers.

UNCG pushed its lead to as many as 20 points, 71-51, with just 8:37 remaining in regulation, but Guilford battled back thanks to the hot hand of Eric Williams. Williams finished the game with 17 points off the bench on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. Guilford cut the lead to 11, 79-68, but could get no closer.

Also reaching double-figures for UNCG was Ray Bristow. The freshman point guard recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 assists. Bristow also recorded a team-high six rebounds.

In addition to Williams' 17 points, Brandon Clifford and Clarence Martin each added 11 points for the Quakers. Jevon Clarke chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. Clifford pulled in a game-high eight rebounds on the night.

The victory extends UNCG's win streak over nonconference foes in Fleming Gymnasium to 16 games. The Spartans' last loss in the friendly confines of Fleming was to William & Mary, 69-55, in the 1998-99 campaign.

UNCG will return to action again on Saturday, January 25, at Davidson. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm in Belk Arena. Guilford's next contest is on Saturday, January 25 at Lynchburg with a 4 pm tip.
