Mt. Pleasant, SC - The UNC Greensboro men's soccer team scored two first half goals and held on to defeat Georgia Southern, 2-1, in the first round of the 2003 Gift of Life/Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championships Friday night at the Patriots Point Soccer Field.
"The boys battled hard tonight for all 90 minutes," head coach Michael Parker said. "We were fortunate to get the two goal lead at the half. The second half was very physical and both teams played extremely hard. This was definitely a good win."
James Goodman, a First-Team All-Southern Conference selection, scored UNCG's first goal of the evening at the 39:14 mark off an assist from Doug Prewett. Just 45 seconds later the Spartans struck for their second goal of the game as James Carlson scored off an assist from Scott Jones, the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year.
Georgia Southern then cut into the Spartans' lead in the game's 70th minute when Justin Gonzales scored off an assist from Tony Moffat, the conference Player of the Year.
UNCG will square off against the College of Charleston Saturday in the quarterfinals. The match is slated for 7 pm at Blackbaud Stadium in Daniels Island, SC. The Spartans defeated the College of Charleston, 2-1, in Greensboro. UNCG got on the board first after benefitting from a Davidson own goal, then Randi Patterson scored to give the Spartans an insurance goal. The other quarterfinal match will pit Furman against Davidson, the regular season champion.
