UNC Greensboro's Randi Patterson Named to the 30-Man Roster of the Under-20 National Team

CHICAGO, IL UNC Greensboro sophomore Randi Patterson has been selected to the United States Under-20 National Team's 30-man roster announced Friday by the head coach Sigi Schmid. Patterson will participate in the team's final training camp of 2004 at the USA Soccer's National Training Center at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., from Dec. 12-23.

“It doesn't surprise me, he's earned his look for the team”, said UNCG head coach Michael Parker. “He will get tremendous experience from his training with the Under-20 National Team. The competition will be very tough, but I feel that he will make a great showing.”

This will be the last camp before the final roster is selected to compete in Group A of the CONCACAF Under-20 Qualifying Tournament, which will also be held at The Home Depot Center, from Jan 12-16, 2005. The United States will be attempting to qualify for the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, which will be held in Holland from June 10-July 2, 2005.

The U.S. will play the second match on each day and open against the winner of the Caribbean Zone Series 1 playoff on Wednesday, Jan. 12 before facing Panama on Friday, Jan. 14. The U-20's wrap up the tournament against Costa Rica on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 2:30 p.m. PT. The top-two finishers in Carson will advance to the FIFA World Youth Championship.

Patterson, a native of Hackensack, NJ, was named the 2004 Southern Conference Player of the Year where he led the league in goals scored (19) and points (46). His eight assists, which was a team-high, tied him for second in the SoCon. He recorded four multi-goal scoring games this season and also registered a point in 17 of UNCG's 23 games this season. Currently he is tied for eighth with 30 career goals and also ranks ninth on the career scoring list with 70 points in UNCG's Division I era.

Patterson led the Spartans to a 19-3-1 record this season, including the regular season Southern Conference title. UNCG earned a No.8 seed in this year's NCAA Tournament and advanced to the third round before losing to UC Santa Barbara, 1-0.
