Volleyball Defeated By Mercer, 3-1

Macon, GA - The UNC Greensboro volleyball team was defeated, 3-1, by Mercer University Friday afternoon in opening day action from the 2003 Mercer Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The Spartans are now 1-1 in the two-day three-match event and will close out play in the tournament, Saturday, versus Louisiana Monroe.

Tournament host Mercer took game one of the match by a score of 30-19. The Bears out hit the Spartans .375 to .270 primarily behind the effort of Kelly Smith who posted a match-high 17 kills.

The Spartans stormed back in game two for a 30-17 victory. Once again LaJean Morrow came up with big plays for the Spartans and ended the match with her fifth double-double of the season. As a team UNCG held the Bears to a -.064 hitting percentage in game two, while hitting .250 as a team.

Mercer rallied to take games three and four with scores of 30-22 and 30-21, respectively.

Morrow posted 18 kills and 14 digs to lead UNCG. Hilary Overby chipped in with six kills and 10 digs, while Kim Dayton added seven kills and 10 digs. Adrian Hicks tallied 37 assists to pace the Spartans.

UNCG will return to action Saturday versus Louisiana Monroe at 11am.
