STATESBORO, GA – UNC Greensboro jumped out to a quick lead and came away with a 2-1 win over Georgia Southern in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon to hold onto its share of first place atop the league standings.

The Spartans (11-4-1, 7-1-1 SoCon) are tied with Davidson with identical 7-1-1 marks in league play. Davidson won at East Tennessee State, 1-0, on Sunday. UNCG will host Davidson on Thursday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, UNCG scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the game to take early control. The Spartans dominated play throughout, holding a 22-3 advantage in shots and a 7-0 margin in corner kicks.

“We played very well this weekend on the road,” said UNCG coach Eddie Radwanski. “We did what we needed to do and that was get two road wins. Now, we can come home to face Davidson.”

Amy Carnell got the Spartans on the board just over eight minutes into the game as she received a pass from Deven Beachum and sent a header past Georgia Southern's keeper for a 1-0 UNCG lead. It was Carnell's 10th goal of the season.

Jessica Patterson increased the UNCG lead to 2-0 at the 14:42 mark. Patterson fed Karla Davis on the right side and then got the ball back at the top of the box, where she sent a shot to the lower right corner of the net. The tally was Patterson's third of the season.

Georgia Southern (4-10-1, 2-7-0) pulled to within one when Ellen Shuler took a pass from Katy Znosko and scored with 25:41 to play. However, that is as close as the Eagles would come.
