STATESBORO, GA – Sophomore midfielder Scott Jones had a goal and assist as the No. 2 UNC Greensboro men's soccer team defeated Georgia Southern, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon in Southern Conference action at Eagle Field. With the win, UNCG improved to 9-0-1 overall, 3-0-1 in league play, while Georgia Southern fell to 4-3-2 overall, 1-1 in the SoCon.
Sophomore forward Randi Patterson scored his team-high tenth goal of the season at 15:38 when he gathered a rebound off a shot from Jeff Lochrie. Patterson, who now has 21 goals in his career, needs one more to enter UNCG's top ten career list.
Jones scored an unassisted goal at 46:44 to increase the UNCG lead to 2-0. The goal for Jones was his seventh of the season.
Georgia Southern cut the Spartan lead to one goal when Lawrence Smith converted a penalty kick at 51:47. The penalty kick was the first allowed by the Spartans this season.
Freshman Matt Smith scored the third goal for the Spartans at 73:31 on a pass from the left side by Jones.
Spartan netminder Jay Benfield had four saves on the afternoon, while Georgia Southern's Adam Webb stopped three shots.
The Spartans return to action Tuesday, October 12 at Davidson. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Richardson Stadium. The Eagles travel to Boone, N.C. to take on Appalachian State on Sunday at 12 noon.
