GREENSBORO, NC – Esmeralda Negron assisted on both goals as No. 17 Princeton shut out UNC Greensboro, 2-0, in women's soccer action at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Friday night, snapping UNCG's school-record 10-game home winning streak.
Princeton (4-0-0) took a 1-0 lead at the 14:47 mark when Negron dribbled down the middle and passed ahead to Diana Matheson who drilled a shot into the lower left corner for the game's first tally.
UNCG had its best chance of the first half just before halftime. The Spartans had four shots from inside 10 yards, but Princeton keeper Madeleine Jackson knocked down three of them and the fourth went just wide as time expired.
The Spartans (4-3-0) also had a goal called back with 28:23 to play. UNCG's Amy Carnell had appeared to score out of a crowd in front. However, the linesman had called offsides seconds earlier and the flag was not immediately seen by the referee. The goal was then waved off.
Princeton then put the game away with a goal by Emily Behncke. She fired a shot from 22 yards out that skipped across the wet grass and by UNCG keeper Jennifer Stillman into the lower left corner to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The teams played evenly for most of the night, with Princeton holding a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal. Stillman and Jackson each made four saves for their respective teams.
Much of the game was played in a heavy rainfall as the remnants of Hurricane Ivan passed through the region.
UNCG's last home loss came last season to 14th-ranked Duke on Sept. 28.
UNCG will open Southern Conference play against arch-rival Furman next Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
