GREENSBORO, NC – Chris Mason pitched 7.0 strong innings in leading the UNC Greensboro baseball team to a comfortable 11-1 win over Ohio in the first of a three-game weekend series at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The junior right-hander from Cherryville, NC allowed only three hits and one unearned run while striking out five batters to improve his record to 2-1 on the season.
UNCG (6-3) pushed across single runs in each of the first two innings to lead 2-0. Freshman second baseman Greg Feltes had a RBI single in the first, while freshman left fielder Mike Mongiello had a run scoring single in the second.
The Spartans expanded their lead in the fifth inning with four more runs. Mason helped his cause with an RBI single through the left side of the Bobcat infield. Senior first baseman Justin Crist followed with a double off the wall in right-center field scoring two. Freshman catcher Adam Deleo capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Ohio (2-5) scored an unearned run in the seventh on a Willie Walker RBI ground out to make it 6-1, but UNCG scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning and two more in the eighth inning as the Spartans scored a season-high 11 runs and snapped a short two-game losing skid.
Mongiello, who hails from East Setauket, NY, went 3-for-5 to lead a season-best 12-hit attack for the Spartans. Junior right fielder Jake Linney went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Deleo was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Feltes and senior third baseman Jeremy Roulin each came up with two hits apiece.
Senior third baseman Brian Colopy led Ohio with two hits and a run scored. Senior righty Dan O'Rourke started and went 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs. He struck out four batters but fell to 0-1 on the year.
UNCG has won 11 straight games over the Bobcats.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow against Ohio at 1 pm.
