RICHMOND, VA – The UNC Greensboro women's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker, 3-2, to Radford in second day action of the VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Invitational Saturday morning at Alltel Pavilion. In the evening, UNCG lost 3-0 to host Virginia Commonwealth.
Freshman Kaitlyn Nortz led UNCG against Radford with a match-high 20 kills against only four errors for an impressive .432 hitting percentage. Junior Hilary Overby, who was named to the All-Tournament team, added 19 kills, while senior Lauren Richards and sophomore Lauren Keiser added 14 and 11 kills respectively.
UNCG (0-3) took its largest lead of the first game, 15-12, midway through, but the game remained tight and was tied 28-28, before Radford won the final two points to take a 30-28 win. In game two with score tied 23-23, the Spartans rattled off seven of the final eight points to garner the 30-24 win.
The Highlanders grabbed an early lead in game three and held on to their advantage the rest of the way, winning 30-23. In game four, neither team led by more than three points, which led to an overtime thriller. A UNCG service error tied the score 30-30 and the game remained tied, 34-34, until the Spartans won the game, 36-34, on a kill by Richards, sending the match to a fifth game.
In the deciding game, a Nortz kill gave UNCG a brief, 5-4, advantage, but Radford regained the lead and held on for the 15-13 victory.
Sophomore Alysia Rosvold once again led the UNCG defensive effort with a match-best 26 digs, while senior Adrian Hicks dished out a team-topping 62. Junior Christin Heverly and Overby each came up with 11 digs apiece.
Against VCU (5-1), Overby led UNCG with eight kills, while Richards added seven kills. Rosvold had a team-best 24 digs, while Hicks doled out 19 assists.
UNCG will visit local rival High Point on Tuesday beginning at 7 pm.
