GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Radford Wednesday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans fell 1-0 and 5-2 in the first games played at the recently renovated stadium on campus.
Breanna Felix (1-2) went the distance in picking up her first victory of the season for Radford in game one. She allowed only a fifth inning single to UNCG's Leslie Furness and struck out four hitters over 7.0 innings.
Radford (4-2) scored the only run of the game on an RBI groundout by Ashley Carlson in the top half of the fifth inning.
Freshman Hannah Angel (0-3) was once again the tough luck loser for the Spartans. She allowed only one run on two hits in 7.0 innings of work. Angel walked a pair and struck out six hitters.
In the second game, Ashley Taylor connected for the first home run at the stadium in third inning. She blasted a two-run shot to right centerfield, giving Radford a 5-0 lead.
Lyndsay Mouse was able to reach on a one-out single in the bottom half of the third for the Spartans and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 5-1. Mouse later came up to the plate as the tying run in the fourth, but grounded out to third with the bases loaded to end the rally.
UNCG (0-7) added a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Kara Clouser, scoring Gwen Johnson, who doubled to left center to lead off the inning.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Mouse doubled over the Highlanders' centerfielder to lead off the frame. Senior Krista Judge followed with an infield single to shortstop that moved Mouse to third. Felix came in to relieve Radford starter Brittaney Brown and promptly retired the next three UNCG hitters to end the game.
Brown got the win for Radford, allowing two runs on nine hits over 6.0 innings of work. Felix struck two batters out to garner her first save of the season.
Senior Danielle Byrne (0-2) allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits in 2.1 innings. Junior Vanessa Oakes entered in the third inning and showed good form by allowing only two hits and struck out seven over 4.2 innings.
