BOONE, NC – Appalachian State scored 10 runs over the first three innings to propel the Mountaineers to a 10-4 victory over UNC Greensboro on Saturday and complete a three-game Southern Conference softball sweep of the Spartans.
Kasey Motsinger broke an Appalachian State (23-24, 8-7 SoCon) school record with two home runs and tied a record with six RBIs to pace the Mountaineers. Motsinger struck for a pair of three-run blasts in the first and second innings to give ASU a quick 7-1 lead.
UNCG (16-28, 3-9 SoCon) cut into its deficit in the third on Lyndsay Mouse's two-run double to left centerfield to make it a 7-3 score. However, the Mountaineers added to their lead in the bottom half of the inning on a Brittany Gaston three-run homer. Gaston had four RBI on the day as she and Motsinger combined to drive in all 10 Appalachian runs.
Krista Judge had a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon at the plate for UNCG, while Kelly Allen blasted a solo homer in the second for her fourth long ball of the season.
Yancy Moose picked up the win in relief to improve to 8-6. She worked 4.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and stuck out two hitters.
Vanessa Oakes took the loss for UNCG, falling to 9-11 after giving up four runs on four hits in only one inning of work. Hannah Angel pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Spartans.
UNCG stays on the road to take on Liberty in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at 2 pm in Lynchburg, VA.
