Shannon Donovan leads Long Island to WPSL title

DRAPER, UT – Shannon Donovan, a rising senior on the UNC Greensboro women's soccer team, was a key member of the Long Island Fury that captured the Women's Premier Soccer League title with a 1-0 win over River Cities FC in the championship game at Juan Diego High School this past Saturday.

Long Island tallied the game-winner in the 88th minute to capture an unlikely title in its inaugural campaign.

Donovan played a vital role in getting the Fury to the title game by scoring an insurance goal in the semifinal round in a 2-0 victory over the San Diego SeaLions. Donovan struck a free kick from 30 yards out into the upper right-corner of the net to give some breathing room to Long Island in the 74th minute.

Katelynn Donovan, Shannon's sister, scored the Fury's other goal in the 38th minute.

"I think we probably defended better than they thought we could defend," said Fury head coach Paul Riley. "We haven't defended very well the past couple of weeks but I thought we defended well today. I figured we score a goal and we got two really good goals, one on the counterattack and the second one was a great free kick. An unbelievable shot."
