NORFOLK, VA Andrew Hoxie and Pat Scherder each scored twice as William & Mary stunned UNC Greensboro, 5-1, in men's soccer action at the Stihl Classic on Friday night.
UNCG (4-3-0) actually outshot William & Mary, 16-15, for the match. The Tribe made the most of its nine shots on goal, scoring with five of them. UNCG had five shots on goal in the match.
The Tribe (3-4-0) earned its first win over a ranked team in five attempts this season. William & Mary scored twice in the first 13 minutes of the match to jump out to a quick lead. Scherder scored off a feed from Doug Ernst just 4:47 into the contest to give William & Mary an early 1-0 advantage. Hoxie then scored his third of the season off an assist by Scherder at 12:20 to make it 2-0.
The scored stayed that way until the second half when Scherder scored off a deflection 6:23 into the second half to make it a 3-0 Tribe lead. Ernst scored again at 69:32 before UNCG's Randi Patterson got the Spartans on the board. Patterson scored his sixth of the season off an assist by Mike Richardson to make it 4-1 at 72:56. However, Hoxie scored again with 2:11 to play off a Jarrett Thomas helper to close out the scoring.
UNCG will look to get back into the win column on Sunday when it faces tournament host Old Dominion at 3:30 pm.
