Storylines
• Tonight is UNCG's home opener. Last year, UNCG had a streak of eight straight home-opener wins snapped with a 72-64 loss to East Carolina. UNCG is 27-13 all-time in home openers, including 13-3 since the move to Division I. Mike Dement's teams are 16-4 all-time in home openers (4-1 at Cornell, 4-2 at UNCG 8-1 at SMU).
• Tonight's game will be UNCG's 200th at Fleming Gym. UNCG is 134-65 all-time at Fleming Gym, including 10-3 last year. Since November 1999, UNCG is 72-22 at Fleming. The Spartans have had plenty of non-conference success at Fleming, having won 31 out of their last 33 non-league games here. In his two stints at UNCG, Mike Dement is 45-21 all-time at Fleming, including wins in 41 of the last 54.
• UNCG, winners of nine of their last 10 at Fleming Gym, opens the season with five of their first seven games away from home and seven of 10 on the road before Jan. 1.
• UNCG is the consensus pick to win the Southern Conference's North Division. UNCG received 10 of 11 first-place votes among the SoCon coaches (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team, thus making them a "unanimous" pick) and got the nod on 12 of 22 media ballots, with Appalachian State receiving the other 10 first-place votes.
• Kyle Hines now has a 53-game streak of scoring 10 or more points, the longest current streak in the country. His 32 double-doubles are the most among active players and he ranks in the Top 10 among active players in career points, rebounds and blocks.
• UNCG returns four starters from last season, losing just Ricky Hickman from last year's regular line-up. 73.5% of the scoring (1530 out of 2083 points from last year) and 78.7% of the rebounding returns from last season. In addition, 76.9% of the minutes played return for this season.
• UNCG coach Mike Dement is 10 wins away from 300 for his career. Entering his 21st season as a head coach, Dement is 290-277 overall, including an 85-90 mark at UNCG (somewhat lopsided by being UNCG's first coach in the move to Division I).
• Kyle Hines broke the school's all-time scoring record held by Jay Joseph (1,646) in the loss at Missouri State. Hines now has 1,647 career points. The next milestone for him would be the school's nearly 40-year old career rebound mark of 933 held by Bruce Shaw and the potential for 2,000 points. Hines begins play tonight at 790. Soon after would be his chance at 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds - a milestone just 95 players in all of Division I NCAA history have ever achieved.
• Kevin Oleksiak became the 10th player in school history to surpass the 100 three-point field goal mark for a career in the loss at Missouri State.
• UNCG has won nine straight games when holding the opposition to 70 points or less. USC Upstate has not scored70 points in a game this season and has only hit 60 once in four games.
