GREENSBORO, NC – Ashley Frizzell and Brooke Loudermilk both had effective pitching performances Saturday leading Chattanooga to two shutouts wins in a doubleheader sweep of UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference action at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Lady Mocs took game one by a score of 7-0 and claimed the sweep with a 3-0 win in the late game.
UNCG (20-22, 1-4 SoCon) kept game one scoreless until the top of the third inning when Chattanooga (22-20, 4-1 SoCon) got on the board with a run scored by Brittany Whittier. The Lady Mocs got their first hit of the afternoon with a double from Whittier which was followed by an RBI double from Laci Upchurch.
Chattanooga was able to add to their tally with a run scored in the top of the fourth inning. Tia Blosser hit a leadoff double and was plated when Brittany Eason hit an RBI single giving the Lady Mocs a 2-0 advantage.
The Lady Mocs threatened to strike again in the fifth inning and were able to load the bases. Whittier reached on an error from Spartan shortstop Adriane Audley and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Ashlan Clarkson hit a single through right field which put two runners on base. UNCG pitcher Vanessa Oakes walked the next batter but the Spartan defense came up with a huge double play to end the inning and avoid the score.
Chattanooga added five more runs with a huge seventh inning and the Spartans couldn't muster any hits closing the game with two ground outs and a pop out.
Vanessa Oakes (8-5) suffered the loss. She allowed two runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of play. Hannah Angel pitched 1.0 innings in relief. She allowed five runs on four hits.
In game two, the two teams remained scoreless heading into the fifth inning. Chattanooga's Upchurch hit a home run over the left field wall to give the Lady Mocs the early 1-0 lead.
Chattanooga was able to add two more runs in the sixth inning. Blosser doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball. She was plated with an Alyssa Edwards two-run home run that pushed the score to 3-0, which proved to be the final score.
Amber Harrell (7-12) allowed three runs on five hits in 7.0 innings of work. She walked two and had seven strikeouts.
First baseman Leslie Furness recorded the Spartans' only hit of the game.
UNCG and Chattanooga finish up the series with a game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
