GREENSBORO, NC Chattanooga used a three-run second inning to lift the Lady Mocs to a 4-0 victory over UNC Greensboro on Sunday to complete a Southern Conference series sweep of the Spartans at UNCG Softball Stadium on Sunday.
Chattanooga (23-20, 5-1 SoCon) struck in the top of the second inning. Chattanooga's Alyssa Edwards opened the inning with a ground out to UNCG (20-23, 1-5 SoCon) shortstop Adriane Audley and pitcher Vanessa Oakes struck out Brittany Eason before Laci Hutchison hit a single to right field. Tara Temby followed with another single which advanced Hutchinson to third base.
Brittany Whitter blasted her third home run of the season over the centerfield wall in the next at bat to drive all three runners around the bases and give the Lady Mocs the early 3-0 advantage.
Chattanooga had a chance to add several more runs in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Spartans came up with a huge double play. Lace Upchurch hit the ball to UNCG pitcher Amber Harrell who threw to Whitney Sirois, who was able to tag Hutchison out at home. With two runners still on base Harrell ended the threat with a strikeout to end the inning.
The Lady Mocs added another in the bottom of the sixth inning by taking advantage of a Spartan miscue by shortstop Adriane Audley, which plated Temby.
The Spartans had a chance to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Shortstop Audley hit a single to right field and Chattanooga pitcher Ashley Frizzell walked designated player Leslie Furness which moved Audley to second base. Bonilla took the bases after she was hit by a pitch from Chattanooga's Brooke Loudermilk which loaded the bases. The Spartans couldn't muster any runs and ended the inning with a pop out and a strikeout.
Right fielder Tara Temby went 2-for 2 at the plate with two runs scored to pace Chattanooga's nine hit offense.
Vanessa Oakes suffered the loss for the Spartans after allowing three runs on five this in 3.0 innings of work. She issued no walks and had three strikeouts on the afternoon. Harrell pitched 4.0 innings in relief and allowed one run on four hits. She had one walk and three strikeouts.
Audley led the Spartans and went 2-for 3 from the plate while Jennifer Bonilla tallied one hit for the Spartans.
The Spartans are next in action April 4 when they travel to Chapel Hill, NC for a doubleheader with the North Carolina Tar Heels. First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm.
