BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team remained perfect in Southern Conference play over its last 22 matches as the Spartans battled SoCon newcomer Samford University to a 0-0 tie on Sunday afternoon in Birmingham.
The Spartans and Bulldogs battled for 110:00 total minutes, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. For UNCG, the tie breaks an 18-game win streak in conference play, but keeps the Spartans undefeated through 22 matches. The Spartans' last tie in SoCon action came on October 1, 2006 when UNCG and Western Carolina tied 1-1.
Samford outshot UNCG by a total of 18-12. The Spartans, who managed only two shots through the first 45 minutes of play, came out of the locker room in the second half to hold the advantage, 6-5, in the second half. UNCG was led by Kelly Attayek, Nicole Danford and Jenn Partenheimer who finished with two shots apiece, while six others registered one shot. Partenheimer leads the Spartans on the year with a total of 26 attempts.
The Bulldogs 18 shots forced UNCG goalkeeper, Kelsey Kearney, to make seven saves on the afternoon. The freshman has now stopped a total of 32 saves on the season. Kearney continued to lower her goals against average, dropping it below one goal a game to 0.92. In seven appearances, Kearney has played a total of 587:03 minutes and given up six goals.
The Spartans had perhaps their best opportunity of the game in the 86th minute of play when a blocked shot by Danford found the feet of Partenheimer, who attempted a shot of her own just four seconds later, but missed the net, sending the ball wide right. Freshman Jaimey Etten had an opportunity to win the game for the Spartans with just 15 seconds to play in regulation, but had her shot saved by Bulldog goalie Cayley Winters. With just nine seconds left on the clock in the first over time, Towne attempted her only of the game, but had her shot stopped by Winters. Winters finished the game with a total of four saves.
Samford also held the advantage on corner kicks, sending six into the box over the course of regulation to just one for the Spartans. UNCG had one opportunity in each over-time stanza, but came up empty.
The Spartans now return home to the UNCG Soccer Stadium for the first time since August 29. UNCG will host The Citadel on Friday evening at 7 pm before welcoming College of Charleston on Sunday at 1 pm.
