GREENSBORO, NC – Laura Olenderski's grand slam kicked off back-to-back-to-back home runs in game one and Lyndsay Mouse had homers in both games as UNC Greensboro swept a doubleheader from North Carolina Central on Tuesday, 14-0 and 11-0, both in five innings.
Up 2-0 after two innings, the Spartans (15-18) blew game one open with a seven-run third. With the bases loaded and two out, Olenderski lifted a drive to left field for her first career home run, bringing in Hannah Angel, Emily Akiyama and Kristen Gabel.
Brittany Ausley followed with her second home run of the season, an inside-the-park homer placed perfectly down the right field line past a diving Ashley Shade. UNCG wasn't done, as Mouse hit her third home run of the season the conventional way, taking it out to left center for a 9-0 lead.
The Spartans batted around again in the fourth, plating five unearned runs, all with two outs. After North Carolina Central pitcher Kristen Schooler got a pair of quick outs to start the inning, consecutive walks and an NCCU error loaded the bases for Ausley. The junior delivered with a single to left center to bring in Whitney Miller and Gabel, and Olenderski and Ausley scored on another error by the Lady Eagles (2-29). Alex Emeterio doubled to bring in Mouse with UNCG's final run of the game.
The game got off to a rocky start for the Spartans, as NCCU loaded the bases in the top of the first with just one out. Angel got a popup to second to start the game, but an infield single and a pair of walks put the Lady Eagles in business.
Pitching coach Vanessa Oakes came out to the circle to settle Angel down, and Angel responded by striking out the next two batters to end the inning without damage.
Angel (9-7) cruised from there, allowing just three more hits in picking up her ninth win of the season. She allowed just four hits and two walks in four innings of work.
Ashley Henderson (0-4) took the loss, allowing nine runs – just two of which were earned – on eight hits and four walks in 2.2 innings.
The Spartans banged out 12 hits in game one, with Ausley, Mouse, Emeterio, Olenderski and Leslie Furness getting two each. Olenderski had a career-high five RBI.
Ashanti Stroud was 2-for-3 for the Lady Eagles.
UNCG picked up right where it left off in game two, plating a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI single from Emeterio and an RBI double from Miller. The Spartans batted around to score five runs in the second, and Ausley, Mouse and Mary Catherine Vercoe all had doubles in the inning.
The Spartans tacked on another four runs in the third, with Mouse drilling her second home run of the day and fourth of the year, a two-run shot down the left field line. Emeterio followed with a solo shot to left center to cap the scoring.
NCCU had its best scoring chance in the fourth inning, getting consecutive one-out singles from Andrea Searls and Michelle Ishida – with Ishida coming just inches from a home run but settling for a single off the top of the wall – but UNCG starter Cory Mattson struck out the next two batters to escape the jam.
Mattson improved to 2-2 on the year, allowing just four hits and a walk in five innings. She struck out six.
Ishida (1-10) took the loss for the Lady Eagles, allowing 11 runs – four earned – on nine hits and a walk in 2.2 innings. Schooler worked 1.1 innings of one-hit ball to close the game.
Miller finished 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Spartans, while Ausley, Mouse and Emeterio, the top three batters in the order, had two hits each. Mouse was 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBI, while Emeterio also scored three runs.
Miller, Emeterio, Mouse and Ausley all had four hits each on the day.
UNCG returns to action on Friday when it hosts Southern Conference newcomer Samford for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
